This is one of the best books in the Vampire Chronicles. I love the beauty of Rice's prose and this novel is an adventure that LeStat will never forget! I enjoyed it very much!

I have always, since a child, for some stange reason enjoyed vampire stories... perhaps my own shadow of "Dark Shadows"... I love reading Rice's prose as she describes things I don't want to imagine!

ISBN 034538475X - Never having read any of Rice's Vampire Chronicles, I was happy to find that this book does stand alone - no previous knowledge required.

Lestat, almost a drama queen in his moments of self-loathing, is approached by a man named Raglan James, who proposes a trade. He will let Lestat be human again, something Lestat believes he wants, by swapping bodies. It is to be a short-term swap, and Lestat overlooks every sign that this could be a bad idea. His friends, human and vampire, warn him against it; James admits to being a liar and a thief... and Lestat takes the risk anyway. How horribly wrong it goes and how it is righted is an interesting story you'll just have to read to discover.

There are a few wonderfully well written parts - most happening while Lestat is human. For hilarity, there's Lestat in his borrowed human body dealing with the things he'd forgotten, especially the "potty" issues. His repulsion is immeasurable and funny as heck. His short lovestory with Gretchen, a nun who nurses him back to health, is unexpectedly poignant and touching and their eventual reunion is heartbreaking. Finally, the way Lestat repays David Talbot for his help in reclaiming his own body is nearly perfect, ruined only by David's forgiveness. That, the very end, is the only part of the book I genuinely disliked - if Lestat's big lesson is to be that he loves being the devil that he is, I would have preferred a less happy ending. Still, read it - and when Lestat suggests that you quit reading, perhaps you should.

The Tale of the Body Thief is definetly one of my favorite books of all time. I found it better than all 3 of the books before it..and may find myself reading it again in the future. That's saying a lot, as I've never reread a book in my life. I'm a bit dissapointed that Rice will no longer be writing paranormal/horror books, but hey, that is her decision. Maybe one day she'll change her mind, we can hope right?

Anne Rice does it again! How would you handle a deal where you gave up your immortal body and powers to live as a human again. The exchange was only supposed to be for 3 days. Then the body thief took off.

Really did not like this. I loved The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned, but this story just didn't work for me.

book four in the Vampire Chronicles and certainly one of the stranger ones. Lestat switching his mind into a human body? "Surely not!", you say? but it is so. one of my favorite anne rice books!

This is by far my favorite story in the vampire chronicles. Such a wonderful story idea - I wish I had thought of it. You don't necessarily need to read the rest of the series to understand this book. It is #4 in the series. It catches up with Lestat not being such a brat for once. He encounters a body theif and well... I don't want to ruin it for anyone. A must read for any vampire lover. Some of the other books in the series aren't really worth a read, but this is the one i would read again and again if it weren't for all the other book on my shelf that crave my attention.

Another great read from Anne Rice. Lestat trades bodies with a mortal! Lots of madness ensues. Lestat's mortal friend David Talbot plays a large role in this story. Book 4 in the Vampire Chronicles. I highly recommend this one.

I'm a bit biased toward Anne Rice, seeing as how Lestat is The Man. Thought the concept was sort of weird, but it was still a good book.

It\'s been said that Vladimir Nabokov\'s best novels are the ones he wrote after starting a failed novel. Anne Rice wrote The Body Thief, the fourth thrilling episode of her Vampire Chronicles, right after she spent a long time poring over that most romantic of horror novels, Mary Shelley\'s Frankenstein, to research a novel Rice abandoned about an artificial man. Perhaps as a result of Shelley\'s influence, The Body Thief is far more psychologically penetrating than its predecessors, with a laser-like focus on a single tormented soul. Oh, we meet some wild new characters, and Rice\'s toothsome vampire-hero Lestat zooms around the globe--as is his magical habit--from Miami to the Gobi desert, but he\'s in such despair that he trades his immortal body to a con man named Raglan James, who offers him in return two days of strictly mortal bliss.

Fourth book in Anne Rices classic vampire series. The story is a bit scaled down as compared to the third book, and is thus more intimate. A word of note: The cover is falling off this copy of the book.

Anne Rice is the master of vampire fiction. This book is the 4th in the "Vampire Chronicles" series, but can stand alone. You can't go wrong with Anne Rice if you like vampires, fantasy & drama.

Anne Rice is always a good writer and fans of her other vampire books will enjoy it. Still, compared to the other books in the series Tale of the Body Thief is lacking. A little too much Lestat insanity.

Awesome book. When I first read it I was 16 and my mother made me get up to do the dishes. By the time I got back to my bedroom I had forgotten where I put it so I never got to finish the last chapter. Then, about a year later, I saw it stuck behind my headboard. I was thrilled to reread the book and the ending surprised the crap out of me.

Lestat has always had a faulty impulse-control valve, and it gets him in truly intriguing trouble this time. On the plus side, he gets to experience romance with a nun and orange juice--"thick like blood, but full of sweetness." But Lestat is horrified by an uncommon cold, and his toilet training proves traumatic. He's also got to catch Raglan James, who has no intention of giving up his dishonestly acquired new superpowered body. Lestat enlists the help of David Talbot, a mortal in the Talamasca, a secret society of immortal watchers described in Queen of the Damned.

"The swapping of bodies and supernatural stories is choice, and there's even a moral: never give a bloodsucker an even break." --Tim Appelo

In a new feat of hypnotic storytelling, Anne Rice continues the extraordinary Vampire Chronicles that began with the now classic Interview with the Vampire and continued with The Vampire Lestat and The Queen of the Damned. Lestat speaks. Vampire-hero, enchanter, seducer of mortals. For centuries he has been a courted prince in the dark and flourishing universe of the living dead. Lestat is alone. And suddenly all his vampire rationale - everything he has come to believe and feel safe with - is called into question. In his overwhelming need to destroy his doubts and his loneliness, Lestat embarks on the most dangerous enterprise he has undertaken in all the danger-haunted years of his long existence. The Tale of the Body Thief is told with the unique - the mesmerizing - passion, power, color, and invention that distinguish the novels of Anne Rice.
