Reads a lot like Norse mythology - stories of Loki and such. Protagonists - not heroes - not even likable protagonists!
In this "Dying Earth" Magic is real - it's all very grim.
Short vignettes and stories made it more readable till I got accustomed to the "style" and content of the book - definitely not a "hard-core" SF, Techno or Post-apocalyptic type of world - just very strange and quirky. It intrigued me enough to keep at it till the whole thing was completed.
