This is the second book in the Highlander series. The story of Grimm and Jillian. Grimm we first meet in Beyond the Highland Mist, where he has a minor roll. Here we learn Grimm's story. Grimm is a Berserker, a race of legenday Scottish warriors. Not understanding what he is, and believing it will lead him to madness and possibly murder Grimm spends years running from himself and a clan, the McKanes, that has vowed to hunt and destroy the line of warriors. Enter Jillian, Grimm's true mate. He however is afraid he will bring her nothing but pain and death and pushes her away at every opportunity. The first half of the book is simply Grimm's struggle with accepting who he is and Jillian's love.
It wasn't my favorite of the series. It was good, but probably the least exciting. I still recommend this book because it is just as vital to read if you plan on catching the entire series. She has a fabulous way of combining celtic mysticism and historical romance without feeling forced. This is a wonderful series.

This is my favorite book of ALL time. Karen Marie Moning outdid herself in this book, showing Grimm to have this beautiful longing for a woman he's known his entire life. The sexual tension between these two is thick enough to slice glass! :)

Not much of a plot and a lot of similar scenes repeated for the first 200 pages: Gorgeous man with terrible secret thinks he's not good enough for amazingly beautiful and rich nobleman's daughter. Keeps pushing her away. Lots of physical descriptions and plenty of passionate scenes. The Celtic and Viking legends are interesting and Moning can tell a good story, but this one didn't hold my interest. I started this series with The Dark Highlander and it's still my favorite of the bunch.

I think these Highlander books start off very slowly. They all have a similar theme, the man (or woman) has some secret that he/she thinks is unworthy of the other's love. Always underestimating their bond to each other. However, I really want to know the full fae story to see how it relates to the Fever series, because I read that first. The end is always good and the book is quite steamy.
