Although there are too many subplots in this book, I adore it. Ive been very interested in Jonathan since reading about him in the second book of this series, TO KISS A TEXAN. In it, Jonathan has just been brought back from the Apaches to live and hes not happy. He rages and just wants to return to the Apache.
Now it is 10 years later and Jonathan doesnt feel he lives any better in his world, but understands he cannot return to the old ways (the Apache are being placed on reservations). Hes inherited a sprawling ranch from his grandmother but has one year to show a profit before it will finally be his.
Jonathan only sees the property as a means to return to his wandering around the world; he plans to get it on its feet and sell it giving him funds to continue wandering. One of his main problems is that no one at the ranch has a head for figures hes in Kansas City to hire a bookkeeper.
Kara ORiley has recently graduated from bookkeeping school and is looking for a position. Karas father sent her off to study because things were getting more violent at the mines and he feared for his only-childs safety. He told her not to contact him for at least 3 months and then to contact him indirectly.
Jonathans lawyer hires Kara but she and Jonathan have problems immediately. Kara is used to touching people while talking with them and Jonathan doesnt like to be touched. He has lived alone for a long time and thinks he doesnt want to change. However, Kara is a unique character who gets under his skin.
At times, this story is hilarious (the wee little bookkeeper.) and sometimes Jonathans insights are sad and prophetic. Ive read this book more than a dozen times and still enjoy it.

One of my favorite Jodi Thomas novels. I've read this one many times and never get tired of it! :-D

Jonathan has his reasons for his bitterness. His personal baggage weighs heavy on his shoulders. He chose Kara for the position not only for her skills, but because he can use her to help a friend reclaim his child.
Kara becomes entangled in Jonathans life, the running of his ranch, and the lives of the people he is connected to. Soon, she cannot ignore her growing feelings for Jonathan. When secrets rear their ugly heads, she must trust in Jonathans newfound love to save her.
