This first title in Greenwood's new series introduces the Night Riders, a team of Confederate raiders betrayed by one of their own. Cade, the Night Riders' captain, leads the team's survivors to his home ranch in Texas where dark-eyed temptress Pilar waits for him. War had changed them all, and Cade will allow nothing to come between them--not even Pilar's turncoat brother.

I found this slice of history very interesting. When the Civil War ended many of the soldiers had a hard time returning to civilian life. Many had no homes left or could not find their families. This is an interesting take on that process for one family.

Cade Wheeler was the captain of a group of Confederate raiders who were called the Night Riders. One member of the group betrayed them by defecting to the Union side. All but 7 of the Night Riders were killed in a surprise attack due to the betrayal. Laveau diViere was the man who deserted to the Union side and Cade knew where to find him as he was raised on a ranch next to Cade's in Texas. The surviving members of the Night Riders vow to find Laveau and hang him. They are all set on getting revenage.

When Cade returns to Texas with his men he finds that the diViere ranch has been taken over by squatters and Pilar, Laveau's sister, and her Spanish grandmother have escaped and are living with Cade's grandfather and uncle. The Wheeler grandfather is nasty and mean to Pilar and has basically made her a slave. The grandmother hates all things Wheeler because the Wheeler ranch at one time was part of the diViere ranch. Grandpa Wheeler basically stole his ranch. Cade decides to be nice to Pilar in an attempt to find out where Laveau is so he can find him and hang him. Cade and his remaining men start to round up the horses and cows that have been roaming wild for the 4 years that Cade has been gone.

Pilar and Cade are very attracted to each other but there is so much distrust between them. Cade and his men drive out the squatters from the deViere ranch and find that the squatters have destroyed almost every thing that grandma diViere holds dear. Over time Cade and Pilar realize that a marriage between them would benefit both families. Leveau returns and grandma attempts to hide him as she wants him to kill Cade. In a gun battle Laveau escapes and the author leaves the story wide open for another book as Leveau vows not to rest until there is a complete destruction of the Night Riders.
