This is by the same author who wrote THE BOOK OF BRIGHT IDEAS. You'll need tissues for this one as a young girl struggles to figure out her place in a family torn apart by crisis and violence. The characters are loveable and as varied as a small town can be. Totally enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this story. It is from the viewpoint of Lucy the daughter who wants to know about her father and what it takes to learn the truth is often very hard. Family secrets and old wounds make for large roadblocks in her search. As you read about the family members it's hard to keep in mind which are the adults and which are the children because age doesn't always make us adults at heart.

One more great read by Sandra Kring. She writes a book like no one else. As soon as you read the first paragraph you are part of the book.

This was written around the death of the Grandfather who everyone saw from different views. Some saw him as a great person while others saw him as a mean and hateful man

Great book take the time to read it

I love Kring's writing style - it's vivid and to the point - not all flowery and wordy. I learned some things about life and death from this book, and thought the story unfolded and ended beautifully. The characters were very real and loveable. I thought the subject matter was really depressing and didn't really look forward to reading the book, but felt like I had to find out the secret and that I owed it to the characters.

Just love the bittersweet writing of Sandra Kring - she's my new favorite author.... I loved this book and also "The Book of Great Ideas" also by her. She's got a real handle on human nature and writes with wit and wisdom (and a little more swearing on the part of the characters than I like, but I get that it's the way they function)... she makes me laugh so often throughout the story, and puts a smile on my face at her redemptive endings.... worthwhile reading, for sure!!!

I can't resist reading a book written by Sandra Kring. She is so gifted at creating a pre-adolescent protagonist that captures your heart and your curiosity until the story ends.

The author creates a small town filled with characters whose personalities and personal lives are flawed and genuine.

I enjoyed Lucy's talent, as young as she is, to bring out the best in most of these characters. She eventually gets them to face trauma created in the past, work through the pain, and find peace within themselves and each other.

I loved this read, it was well written and kept you flipping those pages. Kind of a down to earth read with lots of fun, some suspense and most of all "you'll love these folks" type setting. I'd read it agin.

I really liked the characters. With the story revolving around the grandfather's death, there was a pall over all of it, but I really wanted to find out the answers to the questions she was asking.

I really enjoyed this book and found the further I read the less I could put it down.

The twelve year old protagonist in the book just couldn't leave the past in the past. She had to keep pick at it, digging her fingers in deeper and deeper until the truth was laid at her feet in all it's raw glory. How many of us have longed to ask our mothers about their childhood and were told that we need to leave well enough alone. In this book Sandra Kring just can't leave well enough alone and in the process the reader discovers a beautifully written account of love, loss, hate, anger and healing.
