I loved this book. It was interesting how well the past and present were emeshed so well. The plot was great. Some parts like the extensive descriptions of the outdoors reminded me of his previous books.

I think this author's writing style is unusual. It always takes me a bit to get into the story, but then it is well worth it as his characterization is excellant. Story of an unusual man and his closest friend. The man, who becomes a hermit is traced throughout various stages of his life by various people connected to him. Story is told like we would tell a story, in pieces, not in direct order. One of those books that will stay with you, great depth
I love this author and will read anything written by him. He has a remarkable writing style that makes me want to reread his sentences. Good read about two fellows that meet in high school and the paths they continue on.
I really had looked forward to reading this book because I was so enthralled with "Snow Falling On Cedars." I found it very difficult to get into this book and then couldn't really connect with the characters or care what happened to them. There is an inordinate amount of pedantic musing that I found irritating. It was, for me, a disappointment.

In my younger days when I lived in Seattle, I would have liked this book, because the author uses a lot of real places (unlike the author of the Forks vampire series) that I'm familiar with. I've even spent a cold night in June camped up the Hoh river. Alas, now I'm a grumpy old desert rat, who has no sympathy for these idealistic middle class types.
