First book I've read by this author. Will definitely read more from Ms. Gardner.
Updated after reading the first four books.
This is book two of the ongoing Quincy-Rainie series. In order the books are:
"The Perfect Husband" intro of Pierce Quincy
"The Third Victim" intro of Rainie Conner
"The Next Accident" intro of Kimberly Quincy
"The Killing Hour" intro of Michael "Mac" McCormack
"Gone"
"Say Goodbye"
I have not read the last two books but the rest have all been great reads. I would suggest reading these books in proper order just to understand and appreciate the dynamics of each character and their interaction with each other. However, there is enough background info given in each book so that they don't necessarily need to be read in order.

Excellent thriller as always! This is the book where Quincey meets Rainie. Intriguing. Wish i had her spunk! The local community is shocked when there is shooting at their K-8 school.

Good and suspenseful. Hard to put down. At first, I was a little leary of a book fictionalizing school shootings, but it was really good.

Very good suspense. It grabs you right away and just doesn't let go.
Rainie Conner, a police officer in a small Oregon town running her first murder investigation, pursues a diabolical killer with the help of FBI profiler Pierce Quincy. The murder kills for sport, and becomes fixated on making Rainie his next victim. A well-written, engaging novel. [A]
This is one of Lisa Gardner's books with a haunting topic that unfortunately is getting more common nowadays. Great thriller.
I really enjoy Gardner's mysteries, and this one does not disappoint!
This was really well written, a true page turner. The way that the main characters overcame such a great tragedy in order to see the truth was fantastic. Great read!
I don't remember a lot about this book, other than I like Lisa Gardner. It may actually deserve a better rating.
This book is a page-turner from the get go. Lisa Gardner is my absolute favorite author. The book is suspensful and sad since it deals with school shootings and the aftermath. And it also touches on the feelings of parents whose child becomes a murderer.
I always enjoy Lisa Gardner's books. Well written and an introduction to a new important character
enjoyed this book
A school shooting provides Rainie Conner with her first lead in a homicide investigation. Amid a tiresome pseudo-romance with FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, she tries to determine if the young killer acted alone, or whether he was manipulated from the sidelines by someone far more evil.
riveting suspense.

When it comes to suspense this book fulfilled that requirement without a doubt. I could not put this book down until I knew the outcome.
This was a slow moving thriller. It took me longer than usual to get through it, it really didn't pick up until about 250 pages.
Lisa Gardner is always a great read
enjoyable read
it was a good book, a quick and easy read. I've read all of her books thus far and the plots have started blending into each other. This one is the beginning of the Piercy/Rainie story.
I'm just beginning to read Lisa Gardner's books. They are compelling and certainly have delightful twists. I'm enjoying them very much.

My book has a different cover.

This is a Rainie Conner book. It is very good. A boy is accused in a school mass killing. Once in awhile it seems to slow down but then picks back up.
One of my favorite Lisa Gardner thrillers! Officer Rainie Conner, leading her first homicide investigation, stands at the center of another controversy. What worsens the situation? The suspected killer? the local sheriff's thirteen year old son.
FBI profiler, Pierce Quincy, comes to her aid and...into her heart.

From Publishers Weekly
In her new thriller (following The Other Daughter), Gardner deftly probes the psychology of school shootings while developing a cast of complex, compelling characters. Rainie Conner initially joined the small-town police force in Bakersville, Ore., to escape the ghosts of her past. When she responds to a call from the local school and discovers students screaming, bodies lying inert in the rooms and one young boy holding two guns, however, Rainie find herself leading a controversial investigation and struggling to contain her childhood memories. The fact that the boy is the son of the town sheriff, Rainie's superior and friend, only intensifies the pressure Rainie endures from members of the community, the FBI and the media. Although she tries desperately to do her work amid the growing criticism, Rainie begins to question her own fragile psychological stability. Fortunately, she finds solace in the arrival of the gentlemanly Pierce Quincy, an FBI profiler with a sharp mind and a soft shoulder. The duo eventually reach the conclusion that someone else must be responsible for the massacre, someone who may have recruited the boy to do the shootings. A suspenseful, curl-up winter read, this thriller teems with crisp, realistic dialogue and engaging characters. (Feb.) Forecast: Even though Gardner has only three titles under her belt, her adept use of language and her strong characterizations will ensure her a broad, loyal following. Readers won't be disappointed to learn that Special Agent Pierce Quincy will reappear in her next offering, which is still untitled.

Another good Gardner story. Prelude to The Next Accident.
A horrible crime rips apart a small town.Very good FBI thriller!
Fast-paced, gripping story about a school shooting and its aftermath. Keeps you guessing until it gives you a shocking twist at the end.
Interesting characters. A good, suspenseful book. It turned out to be quite different from what I expected, but I enjoyed it.
The first pairing of Rainie Conner and Pierce Quincy finds them fending off a bloodthirsty crowd rushing to judgement as the killer plots in the shadows, moving ever closer to his true victim....

This is Rainies first homicide investigation and she vows not to give up until she has her man. With the help of Pierce Quincy she goes after the killer but what he really wants is Rainie!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kept me guessing right up to the end. Worth reading
I enjoyed this 2nd book in the FBI Profiler series more than the first one. The characters were more believable and more likeable. It was dark, however, due to the subject matter (school shooting)...but overall, a great read.
very good book
The Third Victim is the second in the Quincy/Rainie series, and introduces small town cop Rainie Connor. A school shooting involving the sheriff's son disrupts Rainie's quiet Oregon town. FBI profiler Pierce Quincy has been researching school shootings, and he and Rainie determine that the case is not as cut and dry as it at first seems.
Unlike the first book in the series (The Perfect Husband), this book reads more like a mystery than a thriller. Though there is however plenty of suspense and action, much time is spent introducing Quincy and Rainie and telling their backstories. I found the ending somewhat disappointing in that it seemed like the connections between the primary school shooting story and Rainie's background were somewhat forced, but ultimately the characters are interesting enough to make this a worthwhile read. I am looking forward to the next installment in this series.

I thoroughly enjoy this book. My problem was I read the series out of order. But I did go back and read them in order. M'. Gardner is very vivid in her characters, and I can see this book as a movie while I was reading it.

great suspense
Lisa Gardner's books and characters are always suspenseful and surprising. I like series and how the characters relate to each other.
This is a real page turner-from start to finish. I grabs ahold and is hard to put down. Riveting. One of the best she has written.
Police officer Conner is the object of a criminal's obsession. This was a book with a couple of twists and turns.
I ended up finishing this book in one sitting - I could not put the book down. The blurb only tells you the story line, not how well the author tells it.
