This book is to hard to follow and I could never get into it.

Had heard that this very early Patterson book was one of his best, but I was disappointed. None of the characters was particularly likeable. Berryman was not well enough developed for me to care about him, and other than the reporter who is writing about him -- almost all the other characters had very distant supporting roles. I ended up skimming the book and pretty much looked forward to finishing and not having to pick it up again.

this is probably Patterson at his best..early in his career, before he felt like he had to pump out NYT best sellers every other month. Should satisfy the mystery lover in all of us.

Didn't take very many pages to know I wouldn't read it, either his first or one of his first but it started out a mess and the more I read the more confused I was as to what this was about but by then I didn't care.

This is the only James Patterson book I could not read through. I believe this was his first major publication of a novel. The characters are too well developed. Descriptions go on forever, and it jumps back and forth over time and character. I had a difficult time keeping up with what had happened and who was on first. I tried reading it twice and had to put it down both times. It is a severe departure from the short chapters and clean action of his more current series.

Started the book 3 times. On the third time I decided I WOULD finish it!!! It was the most confusing book I have ever read! No good at all. If this was the first Patterson book I read, I would not have ever read another of his books! It was terrible!

One of Patterson's first books. Very good and different.

Won the Edgar for best first novel and launched the career of one of the most prolific and best-selling authors of our time. For those reasons, it's worth reading.
Another good mystery by Patterson
I have to say this was the worst James Patterson book I have ever read.
PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS HIS FIRST PUBLISHED WORK -- A more undeveloped piece of work; a much less mature style of writing than what we are used to from him today. Still a master from the literary world.
Not Patterson's best work. "The Thomas Berryman Number" is still a page turner, and the plot is relatively exciting. The writing, though, is simplistic and we never really learn much about the characters. The plot is not very well explained, the time period keeps jolting about, so the book doesn't flow at all. It all just seems like a lot of disjointed thoughts and ideas put together in random order. Not to mention, the ending is abrupt and somewhat anti climatic. It's not up to his usual standards, but not horrible either.
This was the worst James Patterson book that I have ever read..Never could get into the book!!!!
This was the most confusing book I have read in a long time. I never did get the jist of it.
this is the fist book I read by James Patterson and now I'm hooked
Not the best book I have ever read. Hard to follow.
One of his early ones. Definatly not one of his best.
Chilling and compelling.. james patterson has written the classic american suspence novel..
One of Patterson's earlier books, it is in a different style than I was used to. It was a good book though and a quick read.
Patterson's first published book. Very different style than the rest of them. Nice to see that even wealthy writers had a learning curve!
Very disappointed in this one. I could not get into it, so I never did finish it.
I have read a lot of James Patterson Books (and have a lot more to read) and have never NOT finished one.

Written in 1976. He hadn't gotten in the habit of writing 3 page chapters yet.
Not as good as his other books, but still a good story.
This is a shorter book than Patterson normally writes, but it still packs a great punch. Another great book by a WONDERFUL author.
Winner of The Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America
James Patterson, author of the #1 bestsellers Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls, has written one of America's suspense masterpieces. The Thomas Berryman Number begins with three terrifying murders in the South. It ends with a relentless and unforgettable manhunt in the North. In between is the riveting story of a chilling assasin, the woman he loves, and the beloved leader he is hired to kill with extreme prejudice.

I enjoyed reading this book, but felt it was not as well written as most of James Patterson's other books.
Excellant.
Early Patterson. Not his best, but interesting.
