In the summer of 1863, America waas divided by a terrible civil war. Tillie Pierce wanted the union soldiers of the north to win. They were fighting the southern rebels to keep the country united and to end slavery. Now the soldiers from both sides were marching toward Tillie's town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Tillie was sent to a neighbor's farm for safety. But when the cannons started thundering, she found herself right in the middle of the battle. Before the last shot was fired, Tillie knew that she would never forget what she had seen.
