This is the first in a series of mysteries examining historic events (in this case, the murder of Lord Darnley, the husband of Mary Queen of Scotts). The "detective" is an enigmatic man who apparently is immortal. Good characterizations and sense of place although the book -- like so many others in this genre -- concludes with one of those long (and long-winded) "here's what really happened" scenes. Still, the book was good enough to get me to find the rest of them and start reading the next.
