Molly's previous adventures pale compared to what she experiences in this book. Daniel is on the outs with the corrupt New York City police department. So he accepts a temporary assignment with the Secret Service at the request of President Teddy Roosevelt and heads west to San Francisco on an undercover mission.

A somewhat mysterious letter from Daniel sends Molly and her young son on a cross county train trip to find Daniel, and to be on the lookout for another woman's husband too.

Molly finds San Francisco corrupt politics makes New York City look clean. And Daniel has disappeared. I'd like to tell you what I figured out before Molly knew, but that would ruin it for you.

Just when things couldn't get worse, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake occurs. And Molly and her young son, also now missing, are right in the middle of it.

I gave this book an additional star as author Rhys Bowen introduces us to General Funston, who commands the U.S. Army on the West Coast. You don't often hear much about him as, I suspect, the West Pointers would like him forgotten. Frederick Funston was a very successful volunteer general, coming directly from civilian life, in the Spanish-American and American-Filipino wars. He was also General Pershing's commanding officer when Pershing took the American forces into Mexico after Poncho Villa. Bet you didn't know that. Funston was also awarded the Medal of Honor. He died in 1917, otherwise he might have commanded the American armies in France during World War I.
