All three members of the crowner's team have their own problems in this story. Some get resolved, some don't. And Crowner John's brother-in-law, the sheriff, is just as corrupt as ever.

Government is only as good as those entrusted to enforce its laws.

Crowner John is called to investigate the murder of a tin miner and finds himself embroilled in the typical tug-og-war with his brother-in-law, sheriff de Reville, AND with the tin miner's own system of laws. In the midst of this investigation a prominent tin mine owner disappears and a new mystery entangles the Crowner. Who knew the simple reading of will could cause so much misadventure.

This story brings much frustration to our hero de Wolfe as he has so much to lose and is impeded by the anomolous interpretation/ enforcement of the law by each faction.
