To be honest, I was disappointed. This book did not compare to other Scarpetta series books. It seemed to be all background with no climax. There was never any sense of suspense or danger. Pretty boring for a Cornwell novel.

I loved this book. As usual it is Scarpetta through and through. This one tends to show more raw emotion than some of the other ones and exposes more of her personal life. If you are a Scarpetta lover, then is one for you!

Kay Scarpetta and Benton Wesley were planning a two weeks vacation in his Aspen cottage but at the last minute he cancels because he is counseling Lucy's girlfriend Henri who was attacked and almost killed while in bed in Luc's home. Someone is stalking one of the ladies, leaving a picture of an eye on her on her outside door and planting a bomb in her mailbox. Lucy is busy hunting down the maniac.

In the meantime Kay is called back to Virginia by the new Medical Examiner because outside forces wants a highly renowned ME to examine the body of fourteen year old Gilly Paulson. During the autopsy, Scarpetta discovers some bruises that proves she was killed while laying on her back while somebody's knee press her into her pillow so she couldn't breathe.

In the burned house across the way from Gilley's home, Henri and Marcus find mortuary magazines addressed to Kay's old work address in Richmond. Fingerprints show that the culprit is the same person who killed a child and almost murdered Lucy's lover but finding that person will take all the resources at their disposal.

Patricia Cornwell is one of my fav writers and she doesn't let you down in this one. This is the book where she picks up after being relieved of her duties in Virginia and is working with Lucy
I highly recommend this book as there are four or five stories going on simultaneusly that of course all tie up in the end. Typical Cornwell.

reviewed Trace (Kay Scarpetta, Bk 13) on
Against advice from her niece Lucy, Kay Scarpetta answers a request to return to the Richmond medical examiner's office, the same office from which she was fired, to help with the sensitive case of a dead teen. When she and Pete Marino arrive, they find the new medical examiner to be a vituperative, uncooperative martinet and the office that Kay ran so efficiently in chaos. Two murders, oddly linked, demand their attention. In the meantime, Lucy, still unsettled despite her success with the Last Precinct investigative agency, is having personal problems (there's been an attack on her housemate), which strangely enough find her treading the same path as her aunt Kay. Traces of the smart, dynamic, yet vulnerable Scarpetta of the early novels are in evidence here, and Cornwell has better control of her plot and characters than in her last few efforts, faltering only occasionally when psychobabble weighs things down. The mystery is intriguing, there's plenty of forensic detail, and the ending, though perhaps too abrupt, opens the way for Scarpetta and her associates to proceed in any direction that calls to them.

"Make no mistake - this is not the great writing and plotlines of the early Scarpetta books, but it's also not as bad and maudlin as the last two have been. Cornwell seems to at least be making an effort to push Kay Scarpetta back to where she came from and it mostly works in this newest book." amazon review

I always read Patricia Cornwell's books as soon as they are released, but I found this one not as good as some of her older books. The addition of Lucy and her personal problems into her stories has taken away from the actual mystery/thriller facet of her books that I love the most. I adore Marino and I'm glad he's still with her, but after her departure from Richmond, I've never liked her books as well. This one kept me reading, as they all do, but not like her first books in this series. I just could hardly put those down.

This is typical Patricia Cornwell. In this latest Scarpetta novel, Scarpetta and her sidekick, Pete Marino, find themselves back on familiar stomping grounds. Kay Scarpetta is asked to return to Richmond, VA to investigate the unusual death of a 14-year old girl. The current medical examiner personally requests her help, but it is obvious by his attitude that he really does not want her there. So what's behind his request. This was a great read.

Not one of her best. It seem she wrote in her sleep almost. You knew who the killer was from almost the start, which is not a typical Cornwall book. Also there was this really strange thing going where Scarpetta and Marino are in Richmond and having personal problems, Lucy is in Florida and having personal Problems and Benton is Aspen with a "freind" of Lucy and having personal problems and the book spends more time going back and forth between the personal problems of these 4 and the crime and the killer Scarpetta and Marino were called in to solve and catch just seem a minor roll.
If you a Scarpetta fan read the book to keep up with the soap opera, if you want to pick up a book to see what the fuss is about, I would not recomend this book at all. Black Notice, Body Farm, All that Remains are better books to read.

A Kay Scarpetta mystery. This takes place after she has been fired from Richmond and has moved to Florida. She is asked to come back to Richmond for a highly sensitive case that involves the death of a 14 y/o girl in her bed with absolutely no evidence to prove how she died.

I enjoyed book but I'm not sure it was as good as some of the earlier Scarpetta mysteries when she was still in Richmond.

Back in the day, I used to read all of Patricia Cornwell's books until she started to get off track of the actual murder mystery and more into the romance, etc., and then I stopped reading her. After many years, I thought I'd try her again to see if she's gotten any better. Sad to say, I think she's gotten worse, if that's possible. For instance, there is a scene where she's back in Virginia, in the morgue where there are bodies being autopsied. One is a very old man and another is an obese woman. Cornell goes on and on using derogatory and disrespectful terms to describe the obese woman, even during times when it's obviously NOT necessary; yet she doesn't give the same negative or insulting comments about the old man, whereas she certainly could have...very easily. Cornwell's prejudice against large/overweight people really screams out in this book. Whereas I'm an average-sized person, I know and love a variety-of-sized and aged people, so this really ticks me off.

Alas, I finished listening to this book on CD, which, even though it is NOT abridged, had plenty of...skipped...areas that didn't make sense or follow the logical path. I found myself backing up on the CD and listening to certain parts again, asking myself, "What did I miss?" and yet it was never there. It leaves the reader wondering how in the world did we jump from one scene to the next.

What COULD have been a good story and thriller turned into plain old crap with Cornwell's biases and bad writing, not to mention the poor editing job. I will never try Patricia Cornwell again, which is too bad, as years and years ago when she first started out, she was quite good. Perhaps the fame and fortune attacked her ego? Oh well, there are so many other, better authors out there to explore!

Dr. Kay Scarpetta returns to Richmond and her former lab when she's asked to consult on the death of a young girl. Scarpetta suspects murder, but her investigation is thwarted at every turn. Carolyn McCormick does an excellent job of conveying the persona of the serious Scarpetta. Each chapter and twist in the story is enhanced by her inflection and tone. The listener feels the frustration and anxiety Cornwell conveys in her characters. McCormick's delivery of the final chapters continues to draw the listener in as the story approaches its conclusion and the tension builds.

Cornwell is good as usual. This is a Scarpetta novel I believe it is the latest as of Summer of 2005. I liked it because it moves Scarpetta on into her retirement and lets her move around and also allows her to still have a romantic life in her 50's. Ahh there is still hope.

Unfortunately, Cornwell has abandoned the fascinating world of forensic pathology and has chosen to focus on Lucy's personal life, Kay's personal life and self-important beliefs in her own omnipotence and how whoever runs the ME's office has run it into the ground. This book is a hodge-podge of ridiculous story lines surrounding their personal lives. Between Lucy's self-destructiveness and Kay and Benton's strange, masochistic, long-distance relationship where each is revealing some sort of martyr and self-pity streak, what was to be (or should have been) the main story line of the person bent on hurting the ME's office and harming Lucy was pushed aside.

Starting with the second book that Cornwell wrote concerning the French wolfman, she has subverted the pathological issues (which is what I liked about the earlier books) to issues regarding Lucy's and Kay's personal lives. It seems (and now I am being an amateur psychologist) that Cornwell cannot come to terms with the fact that Lucy is a lesbian. Instead of just treating her as a fact or trait in Lucy's life, she has chosen to focus on it interminably, like Cornwell has trouble accepting it or trouble dealing with it.

Overall, this book disappointed me. But, in its defense, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as the next one, Predator, which takes all of what I see as shortcomings of Trace and just escalates them. There, she merely adds Marino to the mix. It's sad. I just keep reading each one hoping and praying that she will bring back what was so good about the earlier Scarpetta books.

Against advice from her niece Lucy, Kay Scarpetta answers a request to return to the Richmond medical examiner's office, the same office from which she was fired, to help with the sensitive case of a dead teen. When she and Pete Marino arrive, they find the new medical examiner to be a rude, uncooperative puppet and the office that Kay ran so efficiently in chaos. Two murders, oddly linked, demand their attention. In the meantime, Lucy, still unsettled despite her success with the Last Precinct investigative agency, is having personal problems (there's been an attack on her housemate), which strangely enough find her treading the same path as her Aunt Kay. Traces of the smart, dynamic, yet vulnerable Scarpetta of the early novels are in evidence here The mystery is intriguing, there's plenty of forensic detail, and the ending, though perhaps too abrupt, opens the way for Scarpetta and her associates to proceed in any direction that calls to them.

One of the later books in this series (#13?), maybe I'm getting tired of it, but it seemed a bit disjointed...Scarpetta is back in Richmond with Marino to investigate the death of a young girl, someone else was attacked at Lucy's house and that victim is now staying with Benton in Aspen....I guess it all fits together in the end, but loosely.
