This was my favorite book when I was 12. I would recomend it. It is a great story of a strong young woman thrown into a crazy circumstance. She begins a well bred young lady and a passenger on a sailing vessel going across the Atlantic. By the end, she is a completly different woman.
It's an excellent read.

I read this book in 4th or 5th grade and just re-read it... Just as before, it was hard to put down.

The book does appear to be a good period piece about the nautical life during the 1830's. However, I was disappointed in the way the story ended and the protagonist's ultimate deceit and decision. I felt the author was injecting a modern radical feminist viewpoint into the past, and the plot near the end just seemed very implausible.

A great period story about a young girl learning to see beyond the facade of "gentle" English society and striving to do something that matters.

From School Library Journal
On a long, grueling journey from England to Rhode Island in 1802, a 12 year old changes from a prim and proper girl to a swashbuckling mate of a mutinous crew and is accused of murder by the captain. Awash with shipboard activity, intense feelings, and a keen sense of time and place, the story is a throwback to good old-fashioned adventure yarns on the high seas.

This is an amazing story that you won't want to put down. I read it to myself, then read it to my 10 and 11 year old daughters who also couldn't get enough of it. It will keep you on the edge of your seat.

A book for adventurous girls to dream with. Historical setting but a decidely non-historical heroine.
I'd recommend this YA novel for anyone who loved Pirates of the Caribbean - it has similiar air of nautical adventure with a 'not-too-unwholesome' air about it.... 13-year-old Charlotte Doyle, through mischance, ends up as the only passenger (and only woman) on a ship bound from England to Providence, RI (my hometown!) If that wasn't scandal enough, the ship is bound for mutiny, and Charlotte is caught between the cruel gentleman captain and the unsavory - but possibly more honest - crewmen. A fun light read!
Excellent book. I remembered reading this as a child, and I picked it up again to read it to my own children. I am so glad that I did! The story is about Charlotte Doyle's crossing from England to American. Without chaperone or companions, the young maiden is left aboard this strange ship with a charming captain, ruffians of a crew, a stowaway, and a dire warning to take heed. She soon finds her world turned upside down only to rely on her sense of honor, justice, and truth to see her through. Avi does a wonderful job of keeping the reader wanting more. One is always asking the question "What will happen next?" Charlotte Doyle is a heroine that one can't help but root for, and it was a pleasure to read her story again.
This book was so awesome!
A teacher read this to us in the 4th grade. One of my favorites to this day. So, so good.
I enjoyed reading this book. I like to read the Newbury award winner books because the writing is quality. Sometimes I am not able to place myself in a young frame of mind though. I can see how Charlotte was a wonderful role model of adventure and courage for young women. As an adult, I found myself questioning whether the events would have really transpired. I often feel this way about these very young adult books. Having said this, I did enjoy the story.
One of my favorite books!

Great book...I loved it. It was unlike any book I have ever read!
The best book ever! What a nice story, Details a great read!
"A spellbinding tale of intrigue and murder on the high seas," the cover says. And indeed it is. A young girl is the only passenger - and the only female - on a long Atlantic crossing on an 1832 sailing ship with an evil captain and a mutinous crew. Good story.

Fabulous book by one of the all-time best children's authors. If you read all of his books you would never know they are written by the same person.
Bought this for my DS for outside reading in middle school. He told me I would enjoy it. I really did!
This is one of the classics I remember reading as a child. Enjoyable and enteraining for any young reader.
This Book is truly magic. It takes you onto the Seahawk and on the thrilling journey Charlotte endures throughout the whole book!
Set in 1832 on the high seas of the Atlantic ocean, this book for young adults is thrilling.

For fun and giggles I decided to read this book again. I read it a long time ago when it was more age appropriate for me. This is a nice period piece that covers a young womans journey through things. If you liked Pirates of the Caribbean you are very likely to enjoy True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. It is age appropriate, but it is also enjoyable and amusing for the older crowd if they wish to watch that.
Very good sea-faring tale. Good description of the ship and the ocean.
This was my favorite book when I was in junior high.
I did not like this book but some people really do...
Not every thirteen-year old girl is accused of murder, brought to trial and found guilty.
