I have such mixed feelings about this book, yet I must rate it as 5 stars. Reading this book was not an enjoyable experience, but I could not stop turning the pages, and stayed up until 2 AM (on a school night!) to finish it.
The story of Maura Murray's disappearance is interspersed with the story of the author's life as he was researching and writing the book...... he goes a little nutty. Initially I thought the author was kind of a jerk (the book opens with him stopping by a strip club on his way home from work), but as his backstory is told along with Maura's, I came to admire his honesty and efforts to rise above a difficult start in life.
Since this is not fiction, there is no tidy ending to Maura's story. Despite the lack of a happy ending and disturbing topics (incest, child molestation, and domestic violence, to name a few), this was a fascinating read.
