The Coen brothers claim that their recent remake (2010) of the original John Wayne movie version of this book is different because, according to them, THEIR version is based more closely on the novel. So I read the novel. The Coen brothers are full of garbage... the original movie is almost word-for-word, scene-for-scene, taken straight from the original novel. And the novel is REALLY wonderful. This is a richly-illustrated, true Western adventure novel; one of the best I have ever read. Charles Portis does a masterful job of bringing his characters to full and vivid life, to the point that they almost walk right off the pages. Whether you're a fan of the John Wayne classic, or a fan of the Coen brothers' remake, or even if you've never seen either film, you should definitely read this book.
i have looked through this book, and what i see is that this book matches the true grit film to a Tee!! This book is a classic western in my book.and it has brought me back memories of john wayne sitting high in the saddle playing rooster cogburn, with that patch on his eye.wonderful read.pure and simple!
I enjoyed this western immensely! The heroine is a 14 year old girl out to avenge her father's murder, and she hires a tough, seasoned old marshall to track the murderer through the mountains. The writing is no-frills and the story fast-paced and interesting. This was a departure in my usual reading, and I am glad I took the chance!! The old John Wayne movie was based on this book.
I read this book in high school (1970s) and loved it for portraying an adolescent girl as a Wild West hero. At that time, it was mostly about the gunslinger and cowboy, never about women or girls.
"True Grit" is an easy read and entertaining. It is about a young girl looking for gritty men to help her in a man's, western world, but she ends up showing the grit too.
If you have seen the movie, it follows the book closely, though Glen Campbell's character is a lot stronger than Campbell was capable of in the movie.
Someone said it was their favorite book; I wouldn't go that far but certainly enjoyed reading. It is not long and hard to put down.
