Lacks a definite audience. It's not very telling. Many of the stories are about her "friends" and not her. Outside of her honest feelings about her weight, many of the other aspects of her life are fact listing. If you're a fan, you know most of these things already. If you're not, there may be some things you'll learn about her history. Overall, I picked up a copy from the library. I'd be frustrated if I purchased a copy.

I love Janet Jackson. She and I are the same age and I remember her from when she got her public start in the entertainment business. When her album Control came out in the 80ties she was one hot product. I have always loved her music and films. She is such a private person in interviews and she reveals so little truth about herself. The book - True You - is not what I wanted to hear from Janet. The first "teaser" chapter is right along the lines of a great begining to the book I wanted to read. An autobiography. This - as she states - is not an autobiography. Sigh... It's thoughts on her struggles to find her True You - or true self. It includes stories and letters from other people and how she inspired them or how they inspired her to find her true self. The last section is just recipes...what a big disapointment. I really wanted to get to know Janet from this book. That did not happen.
I bought this book knowing that it was not a biography, its written over and over that its not, even the title states the fact. That being said I have to rate it for what it is,a famous person giving her own take on everyday emotional issues that we all have or are going through. She says that she is no doctor or professional but that we all learn from each other in our own journeys, and I have to give her that-we (especially us women) lean and learn from each other and reading anyones account in book form of their own struggles does us a world of good especially when it is someone of Jacksons' status. I dont ever expect Janet to come out with a bio. I tend to hear what I can when the Jacksons open up,when they dont I figure it is one of my business.
If you need an uplifting and inspiring viewpoint from an icon you love, this is it.

Janet Jackson reviews parts of her life and life-long struggles with weight and self-esteem. If she battles with these issues, then there is hope for the rest of us. Informative, and good insight.
Great Book, I really enjoyed reading it.
