A monumental biography! Personally, this is one of my favorite biographies I've read. This is the biography of a man history knows well, but perhaps not all of us do. It depicts the man in his childhood, in his family life, through his life as a congressman, and through his life as the President.

Don't let the large page amount scare you! While this book is long, it's a very good read. I wanted to finish the book, and I wanted to get to the next page. The book is written very well, and reads more like good historical fiction novel than a work of non-fiction. I would highly, highly recommend this book to non-fiction fans, biography fans, or anyone interested in learning more about Harry Truman, the man, the President, and the great American.

Absolutely wonderful biography of Harry S Truman, who was undoubtedly the right man at the right time when our nation needed strong leadership. He is among my heroes. The story is read by the author, a real treat for McCullough fans.

This account of Truman will astound most readers with the great decisions made by a simple man of high personal integrity. You will learn much about the things he decided that were and still are of such heavy importance to our country, the modern world and civilization in general.

A great book about a fine but common man.President Truman faced many difficulties for which he is not given enough credit of facing and, for good or ill, solving.
David McCullough has the ability of making the most normal circumstances interesting reading.
I am sure that you will enjoy this book, especially if you are old enough to remember Truman' presidentsy.

Excellent history of a tumultuous period. Truman reminds you of what an individual with political courage can do; a sad counterpoint to today's scene. The author, as always, is excellent.

I love biography and I love David McCullough's writing. This is a massive, thoroughly researched biography of Harry S. Truman, who is probably one of our best, and most under-rated, presidents. truman is a fascinating man with a long and interesting life that makes for a good yarn. Includes plenty of photographs.

David McCullough is a great reader and this abridgement is interesting and has been skillfully done. There were sound bites of Truman's speeches included in the audio, which provided a better understanding of Truman himself. I've visited the Truman Presidential Library and Truman's home and seen a number of documentaries, and I was still surprised by what I learned from this book. Highly recommended.

Long book, I read through his Senate years (that was 1/3 of the book, so the story of his presidency occupies the bulk of the book), it was overwhelmingly a complimentary book. Truman and Lyndon Johnson were on Capitol Hill, in different chambers, much of the same time (Johnson a little further down the relative pecking order), and they seemed to have similar histories, political views, and personalities, but there's no mention in what I read of them crossing paths in the 1935-1945 period.

After reading David McCullough's Truman one can easily call him America's last true patriotic American President. I have put paying homage to him by visiting his grave on my bucket list.
