The "Us" in The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows is primarily the Romeyn family, long time residents of Macedonia, West Virginia, and Layla Beck, the outsider who comes into their midst. What works in this book is the historical background, the setting, and the quirky characters. What doesn't work is the level of sometimes unnecessary detail and the slow pace. So, I liked the book; I just didn't love it.
