Itruely enjoyed both of these
I had very mixed feelings on this one. A two parter, this is basically the story of twins who each fall in love unexpectedly and marry. The stories take place at roughly the same time--first focusing on Houston, then on Blair.
The basic plot is that Blair, a feircely independent doctor, falls in love with and into bed with Houston's fiance (Leander) in a night of passion. Lee decides to marry Blair instead. Meanwhile, Houston is left jilted until Kane Taggert come to her rescues. Kane is outragously wealthy, but extremely ill-mannered and uncultured. Much of the action stems from the coal mines in all of their danger, filth, and poverty--and our character's efforts to help those less fortunate.
I did enjoy both sisters very much. Houston seemed to much of a pushover at first, but she makes up for it in guile and determination. Blair is extremely likable in that she's smart, defiant, and passionate. The men, on the other hand, had their ups and downs. Leander was often stiff to the point of uninteresting--but again, he makes up for it. I couldn't stand Kane--the way he talks, the way he treated people, and his shear stupidity just irritated me. Mostly as a result of this, the first book drags on in a rambling pointless manner. I could have done without all the miscommunications and mixups. They didn't do much to build the story, they just bored me to tears. Overall, these books are average. If you like the frontier 1892 setting, you might enjoy them.

Re-release. Two early books from 1985 in one volume. The stories of Houston & BLair - commonly called Houston-Blair by the town folks, who have trouble telling them apart - and the two men they do not plan to fall in love with. Nice afternoon read.
