Cooper's admirals are bound to fight the French fleet. In the interim, "the Pretender" lands in Scotland. So what, you say? Well, it seems that while both are loyal to the crown, one of them also has loyalty to Scotland. dilemma, dilemma. Anyway this is all resolved in the end. Along the way Cooper introduces some rather arcane and moronic English law concerning estates and inheritance; all rather in the vein of Wilkie Collins and totally confusing. This is not one of his better novels, no doubt why it has been relegated to obscurity.
