I'm enjoying this series by Andrea Boeshaar. Uncertain Heart is the story of Sarah, a young governess in the household of a nice, but controlling Captain in Milwaukee following the Civil War. Her heart, however, belongs to the Captain's handsome steward, Richard. Good story that continues with the next book, Unexpected Love. Highly recommended!
Sarah, a music teacher, takes the summer position of governess for Captain Brain Sinclair . . . The Captain is "older" and very debonair, so he immediately grabs Sarah's attention. And Sarah is as much in love with the thought of luxury, culture and social privilege as she is attracted to the Captain. She loves his children even when the Captain ignores them and they, in turn grow to love and respect her.
Sarah has also gotten to know Richard Navis, Captain Sinclair's indentured servant who works in his warehouse. Richard immediately recognizes the wonderful heart in Sarah. Although he watches out for her on numerous occasions, she sees him only as good friend. Richard also realizes that Sarah longs for more than he can give her, for Richard wants to be a farmer and his heart is in working the land. And Sarah plans to return to the Chicago teaching job in September.
However, circumstances beyond Sarah's control, cause Sarah's reputation to be questioned. Not a good thing to have a "bad" reputation in the 1800's. For a bad reputation usually meant that one could not get a good job or in a lady's case, she would have no hope for a good marriage. Sarah is heart broken for she loves working with the the Captain's children. Then Richard steps in and devises a daredevil plan to protect Sarah. But will he or Sarah end up getting hurt? Will the plan really make "things" come to light and help the truth to be revealed? A surprising plan with a surprising ending.
