Gus Wheatley's wife, Beth, disappears without a trace with a serial killer on the loose in town. The FBI are called in and think that Beth might be in the killers sight since some of the victims greatly resemble her. Somehow a cult is brought up and an FBI agent goes undercover to see if there is any connection. A few twists and a rather surprising ending.
This is interesting and does keep your interest but once it gets into the whole cult thing I kinda got bored.

good story
legal thriller set in Seattle, featuring character Gus Wheatley.
Gus Wheatley thinks he's found success. Money, power, prestigethey all come with the territory for the youngest lawyer ever to grab the helm of Seattle's most prominent law firm. Nothing can interfere with his meteoric rise to the topuntil his wife vanishes. .
Beth dropped off their six-year-old daughter at the youth center one afternoon, and no one has seen her since. Her disappearance comes just as FBI profilers are called in to examine a bizarre emerging pattern of brutal serial murders that rocks Seattle. The FBI dubs them "bookend killings, " as the killer seems to be striking his victims in pairs: first two men, then two women. The victims are unrelated, yet within each pairing, one mirrors the other in chilling detail. .
But this is just the beginning of the nightmare for Gus. Soon Seattle police fashion a theory that leaves two horrifying possibilities: Either Beth is the killer's latest victim ... or she is his willing accomplice. .
As the gruesome murders continue, and with Beth's whereabouts still unknown, Gus starts to investigate. He cannot accept the idea that Beth would ever ally herself with a cold-blooded killer, but only now that she's gone does Gus realize just how far apart they've grown. Slowly, Gus begins to unravel the shocking truth about the woman he thought he knew. Beth may be alive. She may or may not be innocent. She may have come up against something far more evil than just a serial killer. And for Gus and his family, that evil is far too close to home.

This abridged audio version (approved by the author) is wonderfully performed by Ron McLarty. Under Cover of Darkness is not part of the Jack Swyntek series but a standalone novel of suspense and mystery involving a missing wife. Husband, Gus Wheatley takes an active role in the search for his wife, Beth, and a serial killer that the FBI feels may be responsible for her disappearance. Many twists, many turns, and such betrayals come to light! So far James Grippando has never failed to entertain and delight me with his novels, and Under Cover of Darkness is no different.
This is an abridged version on 4 cassette tapes.
A young lawyer at the helm of Seattle's most prominent law firm, Gus Wheatley has found unprecedentedsuccess. Then his wife, Beth, vanishes - a disappearance that coincides with a series of brutal murders. The FBI thinks Beth is either the killer's latest victim.... or his willing accomplice. Gus is sure his wife is no murderer. But the more he searches, the more he finds that Beth isn't the woman he thought he knew. Beth may be alive. She may have come up against a shocking evil.
