Beautiful prose - like poetry. I felt for the painter in this book, although I didn't understand him or his actions at all times. It was interesting to read of the parallels between "underpainting" one's artwork at the same time one "underpaints" one's life. And if you examine it closely enough, the reasons behind both are virtually indistinguishable.

I liked this, very original story and quite well-written. I'll seek out other books by this author.
Beautifully written and believable as an old man reminiscing. I wanted to read it real slow because some of the thoughts, sentences, phrases just made me want to sit and ponder them for a while...they were so true to life. Her writing in this book reminded me of that of Wallace Stegner, so if you liked his writing, you'll love this! This one is like stepping into the clouds and mists and being steeped in deep thought. Definitely a book for deep thinkers:)
