In this compelling, thought-provoking book, Judith Wallerstein explains that, while children do learn to cope with divorce, it in fact takes its greatest toll in adulthood, when the sons and daughters of divorced parents embark on romantic relationships of their own. Wallerstein sensitively illustrates how children of divorce often feel that their relationships are doomed, seek to avoid conflict, and fear commitment. Failure in their loving relationships often seems to them preordained, even when things are going smoothly. As Wallerstein checks in on the adults she first encountered as youngsters more than twenty-five years ago, she finds that their experiences mesh with those of the millions of other children of divorce, who will find themselves on every page. With more than 100,000 copies in print, The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce spent three weeks on the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Denver Post bestseller lists. The book was also featured on two episodes of Oprah as well as on the front cover of Time and the New York Times Book Review.« less

An excellent book- I read it from front to back, no problem. It is an amazing account of divorce and the effects on the children involved. I recommend it for anyone who is a child of divorce. I read it before I got married- I told my husband-to-be that if he wanted to know how I ticked, he should read it too.
Book reads like a compelling novel. A courageous and objective confrontation of the aftermath of divorce as it affects children from childhood to adulthood. A must for anyone dealing personally or professionally with the issue of divorce. ....
This book was recommended to me by a friend. I had no interest in reading it but it kept coming to my mind. Finally I got ahold of it and it was an eye opener. As a child of divorce, this book helped me understand things about myself I didn't know. It also really solidified my desire to keep my own marriage healthy. Very insightful.
This is a great book. From the perspective of a child who went through 2 divorces - one as a young child and one as a teenager. It has helped me come to terms with a lot of the issues I never thought I had. Highly recommend for both children of divorce and parents who have divorced to help you help your children through this difficult time.
