Very good novel of the frontier-the hardships, way of life and of course the cycle of love and death. It was an enjoyable read as is all of Bittner's books.

This book touches on some of the highlights (lowlights?) of the history of the west and of this era: taking land away from the Native Americans that had been granted by treaty and giving it to settlers; the Wounded Knee Massacre; the Oklahoma land rush of 1889; the Ghost Dance religious movement; gold mining in the Rockies around Pikes Peak. Although the dates are changed to suit the flow of the story, these historical events are believably incorporated.
The story begins in 1889. It is the story of an indomitable woman and the man who comes to love her. Strong women were not universally revered in this era, to say the least.
