Dollycas's Thoughts

We have come a long way with these characters and in this installment Clyde's sister, Grace, and her husband, Paul, come to Crystal Haven for a visit. This is the first time in fifteen years that Grace has returned. She didn't want anything to do with the psychic abilities of her family even though she has an ability herself that she uses daily. That ability may be why she has come home. Of course, seeing her son Seth, is always a bonus.

They quickly get caught up in a town celebration that includes a Zombie Fun Fun. This is the 2nd book I have read recently that has included a zombie event in a town celebration. Zombies aren't really my thing but since these were costume events and no actual zombies were featured so I enjoyed it quite a bit.

When the fun run ends, the partying begins for all but one of the participants. One of the runners didn't show up at the party and was found murdered in the woods. Grace has only been in town a couple of days and someone decides she or Paul could be the murderer/s. With Mac on the police department Clyde knows he will prove their innocence, but it doesn't stop her for doing a little investigating too.

This story is absolutely fantastic! So much happens within these pages and I don't want to give anything away.

Dawn Eastman has written a very captivating mystery featuring the characters we have grown to love. I have my reservations about Grace and Paul but their situation is pretty precarious so that may tilt the scales more in their favor. Clyde's family is a little over the top. I love Aunt Vi. Sometimes I want to hug her and other times I want to lock her in the basement and throw away the key. Mac handles her much better than I ever could. The Fortune Family is not your normal Midwest family but Mac loves Clyde so her family and all their shenanigans are part of the package. Yes, even when they find a dead body or try to find some "lost" diamonds.

The paranormal aspect was a little more present in this story as Clyde tries to refine her gift. It has become more interesting as she learns her capabilities.

Each of these stories is even better than the last. This is one of my favorite books I have read this year. I highly recommend the entire series.

I enjoy Dawn Eastman's Family Fortune cozy series. The main character Clyde (short for Clytemnestra-- don't tell anyone) has a police background which comes in handy whenever she trips over a body, and she's funny, smart, and full of common sense to boot. The paranormal element in this book-- and the entire series-- is done with the very lightest of touches, which is something that I prefer.

Eastman does an excellent job in the scenes that take place during that Zombie Apocalypse Fun Run, making them both extremely creepy and very funny. Thank heavens for that humor because zombies give me the willies. (Yes, I know that's silly.)

As in all the best cozy series, characters are the strength of the Family Fortune mysteries. In An Unhappy Medium we finally get to meet Clyde's sister Grace and her husband Paul. Since they've seemed perfectly happy to have their son Seth move across country to live with Clyde and go to school, this was a much-needed meeting. Something's got to be going on, right?

Probably the biggest character of them all in this series is Aunt Vi, supposed pet psychic, owner of the new Psychic Finders business, and all-around yarn bomber. Yes, she's more than a bit kooky, and... if her businesses are so popular, why does she always have the time to stick her nose into Clyde's business, hmmm? She's one of those family members that you just have to shake your head at and laugh.

Amidst all these characters and relationships, Eastman has created a good solid mystery. There's more going on than meets the eye, and there's some excellent misdirection. If you're in the mood for well-written, light-hearted reads, I recommend Eastman's Family Fortune series, which just keeps getting better with every book.

So far this is the best book in the series. Enjoyed it very much. Fun, crazy and a great mystery. Didn't know who the killer was until just the last couple of chapters. Nice family and good resolutions to a couple of earlier things that went on. The kids are fun and want to know what is going to go on with Sophie. Clyde and Mac are a great couple.
