Ironically, gives a balanced view of both the manic and depressive parts of the illness, while also laying out a straight-forward clinical view. The description of the mania is possibly the best and most accurate I've ever read.

A great memoir to read. Kay Redfield Jamison not only is a foremost authority on manic-Depressive Illness (Bipolar Disorder) but she is also a sufferer. Her insight into the illness is good and her experiences give insight to the illness. One must remember that she is a Dr. so some of the book is a little more dry and medical/pshiatry like rather than it being an easily flowing story. however, I truly enjoyes the book and I think it is one lts of individuals should read. This is also a BookCrossing.com book.

I read this book when I was first diagnosed as bipolar, and it helped me come to terms with my diagnosis. It had taken 6 years for the proper diagnosis, and as such, my treatment had never quite matched my illness. This book helped me to understand my behaviors and moods, and helped me understand I wasn't alone. It was a beautifully written poignant memoir for me.

This is the best book I've read on being bipolar. It helps one recognize the impulsiveness that goes hand in hand with the disorder. For those unlucky enough to have the disease, you are swept up into articulate recognition of what you need to do. I highly recommend it. It helped a lot, giving me cues to watch for.

I loved this book. As a fellow bipolar, it really made me feel 'not crazy' and it helped a lot knowing that other people feel the same way and go through the same things as I do!

This was a classic case of overdone expectations. I had heard so much about the book, I was disappointed. Somehow her clinical view took the punch out of her story.
Great view from the other sside.

I had to read this for a graduate course and enjoyed it. It gives you all the information you will need to know about Bipolar Disorder but not in a boring way. Would recommend this book especially if you know someone with this mood disorder.
This memoir is the real-life story of a woman with manic-depression (bipolar disorder) and the way it impacts her life. It is dramatic, funny, poetic, sad, and beautiful all at the same time.

She's a good writer. Of course, writing about yourself is easier, but still, she does it well.
