Here is a book I wish I hadn't started reading until the weekend because I couldn't put it down. I have recently discovered some of the classic military novels and this is one of the really good ones. This is the story of a retired army homicide investigator (who you want to shake once in awhile!) and how he gets coerced into one last mission: Investigating a murder that happened 30 years earlier-in wartime Vietnam. An excellent look at the Vietnam war and what the war did to a country, its people and Americans. Lots of excitement when investigator Brenner is paired up with expat Susan Weber. Some historical information, a little romance, travel to foreign places, a murder or two: There is something for everyone in this thriller.

More than a blood-and guts thriller. An insightful, moving, and sensitive look at what the war did to a country, its people & its enemies.

I enjoy all of his work. I didn't think I'd like this one dealing with the Vietnam War, but it was hard to put down.

I'm the odd man out here. I think I would have enjoyed the Readers Digest version of this a lot more than the 854 pages this book contains. I found myself skipping two or three pages at a time trying to get passed, to me, rambling boring dialog and to find where the book gets back on point. Very slow read for me and probably should have gave up on it instead of trudging through to the end.
A bit long but good.
This is one of the better books I've read.... It was the first book by Nelson DeMille, and made me immediately read everything I could find by him.
In fact, looking back on it. I think I'm going to read it again. along with 'Charm School' and 'The Lions Game'.

This book was really fun to read. Not very complicated but a good one for the summer reading list.
Lots of twists and turns. You will turn the pages to see more.
Paul Brenner returns to Vietnam to investigate a murder that took place in wartime thirty years ago. He's plunged into a world of corruption double cross, and haunted memories.
Good read.
Good read.
Former army homicide investigator Paul Brenner has just gotten used to the early retirement forced on him after the disastrous end of his last case when his old commanding officer asks him to return for one more final mission: investigate a murder that took place in wartime Vietnam thirty years before. Brennar reluctantly accepts out of curiosity and loyalty --- and maybe a touch of boredom. He won't be bored for long.
A thriller. Story of a soldiers return to Vietnam to investigate a murder that took place in wartime Vietnam thirty years before.
One of my favorite DeMille books.
I loved this book. It was so exciting and kept me wondering what was going to happen to this guy next.
This book is one that just everyone will enjoy. mr. DeMille never disappoints.
If you like DeMille, you'll love this visit to Viet Nam by former army homicide investigator Paul Brenner. He visits the country and ends up plunged into a world of corruption and danger, while investigating a thirty year old murder.
DeMille is a favorite author of mine, and this was not disappointing.
Very good but long read!
Demille seems not to have a very deep understanding of Vietnam, should have done more research before writing this book.
I enjoyed this book but I think that Nelson over uses his character Paul Brenner.
A Viet-Nam vet return on a secret mission. Interesting view of the war from veterans on both sides.
Great story, interesting characters, and a strong sense of place
His best book todate
action and suspense this book has it all

Brenner reluctantly accepts.
I've long been a fan of Nelson DeMille, but found this one tedious and on the brink of boring. It's long on Vietnam war history and short on mystery. And it's just Long!
