I picked this book up while on vacation a few years ago. An online buddy had suggested this author a couple of times, so when I found this title on the shelf I thought I would give it a try.
This being a new author to me, I wasn't sure what to expect. I enjoyed reading it, it passed the time by the pool. I loved that alot of it took place in the Atlanta area so I could actually see what the author was describing.
This story was about a woman's path to healing after finding out that her husband has been running around on her with another woman. Quite a blow to her ego and self esteem. She has to learn how to live again, how to make money, etc. I am not big on novels that deal with cheating, but this was a pretty decent read.

If you enjoy reading Anne Rivers Siddons, you'll love this one about a Atlanta woman whose world crashes down upon her, yet rents a small cottage by herself on Martha's Vineyard and finds a brand new kind of family

Great story, especially for anyone whose husband has decided he
wants someone else after many years of marriage and 2 children. See
how Molly handles the problem. I did find some of the language
offensive.

I think this is one of the best books Siddon has written. Molly Redwine is left by her husband for a younger floozy and finds a new life away from Atlanta on Martha's Vineyard. Really good story

A great read from Anne Rivers Siddons. She creates believable characters who struggle with the things life throws their way and emerge with a clearer vision of who they are. Quoting the back of the book; "There are endings-and there are second chances"

I've had this book on my bookshelf for years and finally read it this past week ... loved it ... Ms Siddons brings the characters to life and makes you wish they were real people ... I loved the way she describes the Northeast coast ... somewhere I have not been yet and now I really want to go see " Up Island " for myself . I found myself laughing, crying and cheering while reading this book - a true sign of an excellent read .

I loved the descriptions and the details given by the author in this book of Martha's Vineyard. It made me feel like I was there enjoying the scenery. It was an enjoyable read, and I would recommend it, but I must say I was not happy with the ending. I had hoped there would be more.

Very good story line with excellent characters. Anne Rivers Siddons is an excellent writer. I have read and loved many of her books. This one was no exception to that. She manages to weave an interesting story and tie in many loose ends. Molly Redwine is the main character in UpIsland. I found her to be very real. I liked the way that Siddons wrote this tale as a type of metamorphosis of a woman going through a divorce and coming to terms with her relationship with her mother. It was good! I'll remember this one for quite awhile!

Intriguing story of endings and second chances. Molly Redwine loses her husband to a younger woman, her mother dies, and her world is crumbling. She retreats to Martha's Vineyard to search for new identity. This made good reading on an airplane for me.

Molly Bell Redwine has had the mantra 'family means everything' instilled in her from early childhood by her charismatic, demanding mother. But in what seems like a single instant, Molly's world is tilted on its axis and she is shaken to her very core by the aftermath. When her husband of more than twenty years leaves her for a much younger woman, Molly's world crumbles around her. She is devastated to learn that the "Other Woman" has stepped in to Molly's life and essentially replaced her - moving into Molly's house, taking over her social position and earning the affection of Molly's son.

With the death of her domineering mother, Molly is truly set adrift in the world. Seeking refuge with a friend in Martha's Vineyard, Molly begins to search for her own identity. When her friend departs, she decides to stay in Martha's Vineyard by herself. Molly rents a small cottage, assuming the duties of caretaker for two cantankerous elderly women who share a haunting secret, the gravely ill and estranged son of one of those women, and a pair of territorial swans.

As Molly's stay on Martha's Vineyard widens the distance between her and her old life in Atlanta, she learns to let go of her outdated notions of family and becomes part of a different - but still very real - new family. As winter closes in on Martha's Vineyard, Molly struggles to nurture them and looks forward to a more hopeful future.

I really enjoyed reading Up Island. In my opinion, Anne Rivers Siddons is a truly great author - she really draws the reader into the story, and they are captured by a desire to know what happens next. I vaguely remember reading this book before several years ago, but I couldn't really remember most of the plot, so it was like reading an entirely new book for me. I give Up Island by Anne Rivers Siddons an A+! and will place it on my keeper shelf to read again.

THERE ARE ENDINGS---AND THERE ARE SECOND CHANCES

"One doesn't read Anne Rivers Siddons's books; one dwells in them." --CHICAGO TRIBUNE

If there was ever one woman who knew what was important, that woman was Molly Bell Redwine. From childhood, Molly was taught by her difficult, charismatic mother that "family is everything." But in what seems like an instant, Molly discovers that family can change without warning. Her husband of more than twent years leaves her for a younger woman, her domineering mother dies, and her Atlanta clan scatters to the four winds. In a heartbeat Molly is set adrift.

devasted by her crumbling world, Molly takes refuge with a friend on Martha's Vineyard where she tries to come to terms with who she really is. After the summer season, Molly decides to stay on in this very different world, renting a small cottage on a remote up-island pond.

As Molly's stay up island widens the distance between her and her old life in Atlanta, she lets go of her outworn notions of family and begins to become part of a strange--and very real--new family. As the long Vineyard winter closes in, she braces herself for the search for renewal, identity, and strenght, until the healing spring finally comes.
