The pacing in this story could have been better. Previous books by this author were delightful, but not this one. This book moved too slowly. Kenneth was a gentleman's son and will inherit an earldom from his uncle upon his death. Meanwhile, the earl is teaching Kenneth how to be an earl. Part of that is having a wife. Unfortunately, Kenneth is older; his wife died early after giving him two sons. One of the sons is in university, while the other is getting ready to go there.
Rebecca is a widow with one daughter, Rose. Rose has gone to live elsewhere as a companion. Rebecca returned to her father's house when her husband, David, died. She has lived there for eight years, helping her father earn a livelihood as an artist of shadow art. Her father does a minimum amount of the work, and Rebecca does the remainder (without payment or appreciation from her father). He is growing more challenging to live with as time goes on. Lately, he's started throwing things at Rebecca. So Rebecca takes her things and temporarily moves to the vicar's house while searching for a new situation.
