Be prepared to enter into the tragic world of Aubrey Wallace, a slightly retarded man who comes under the spell of Dotty Johnson the kind of woman no one can ignore. One afternoon, they both disappear from the small Vermont town where they live and the next day two hundred miles away, a toddler is snatched from her Massachusetts home.
This book will send chills up your back, yet keep you turning pages to see what is going to happen next.

Awsome read. This is a powerful book. Don't know if i can put into words how great this book is. A man slightly retarded, a beautiful young woman, she steals a baby. They grow older together for 5 years and then the woman decides to give back the child. Very strong ending WOW I really didn't expect it. Never saw it coming. You'll love this book.

This is my second read from Mary McGarry Morris; I first read Songs in Ordinary Time last year and picked up this book to give it a try based solely on how much I enjoyed Songs. This book far surpassed Songs, in my opinion. While it is a much shorter tale, it was also more heartwrenching and emotionally captivating for me. This book will draw you into the lives of the main characters in ways that are touching and tender, yet horrifying and disgusting all at once.
This story packs a punch with brutal honesty and vivid descriptions, pushing past the norms of society and what's considered acceptable and liveable... The 3 main characters -43-year old Aubrey Wallace, 25 year old Dotty, and 5 year old little Canny - are developed to the point where I felt like I might know them in real life, all their quirks, habits, and personality flaws. Being drawn so close to these characters made it hard for me to put this book down!
If you liked Songs in Ordinary Time, you must definitely give this book a try! This book confirmed the fact that McGarry Morris deserves to be in my Top 10 list of favorite authors.

A very good book. Engrossing characters and storyline, one that is hard to put down until you reach the climatic ending.
Wow, this book is amazing! My heart breaks for little Canny during the entire novel. I love this book!
Another riveting, emotional, sad book by this author. She writes so well, and her characters are so deep and her descriptions so detailed and poetic, it's like it's addictive and you cannot put the book down. This story is heartbreaking and you keep wanting things to work out for these unfortunate people who never really had a chance in life.
Shorter than "Songs in Ordinary Time"-but just as interesting. I enjoyed this one a lot.
"A Starting and Powerful Debut....Hums with both the authenticityof real life and mythic power of fable... Dazzling."
