This story continues the storyline from previous books. Nikolai has been sent to Quebec to find and warn a Gen One warrior about the assinations of other Gen Ones. There he finds a Breedmate, Reneta, who is a warrior. She possesses an amazing ability and uses this first against him and then to assist him as she finds out he isn't like the other vampires that knows.
This story is almost entirely centered around Nikolai and Reneta. There is a small appearance by Lucas and the Order, and a secondary plot involving Henrich in Berlin. But the majority of the book is on them. We do get introduced to a new character who looks like he will play a large part further into the storyline.
It appears that we are rapidly coming to the climax of the story arc. I feel the best is yet to come and can't wait for the next book.

I am usually a "READ THE SERIES IN ORDER" kind of girl so when I started this book and realized that it was the 5th in a series, I almost put it down. It was given to me by a friend and I decided to go ahead and give it a try. Even though it would have been better if I had read them in order I can tell you that the story can stand alone. Of course it made me want to read all the books that have come before and the story line sets you up for what's to come. I love strong women who understand that love is not a "FOUR" letter word so this heroine was wonderful. Loved Niko!!!
Another great book! Her books seem, for me at least, hard to get into in the beginning, but once they take off, I am on the edge of my seat! This book takes up right where the previously one left off, so it is really a good idea to read all the books in order. You will better understand everything that is going on much better that way.

I have collected most of this series (didn't care for Tegan's story much) so I hoped I would really like this one. At first I really did. I love Niko's character. I even loved the heroine - Renata...at first. But what I had hoped would be a killer storyline went south.
I despise love stories with kids as a main character, and this one is no exception. The author threw a kid into the mix and for me, ruined it. I won't give away how or why other than to say it turned me off from that point on. I really hope her next book redeems itself or I may just stop with this series.

I am first a huge BDB fan but these books do grow on you and I have to say with each book Lara Adrian does get better. I enjoyed this book.

I think that this book strayed closer to the Urban Fantasy mark than Romance. I would be fine with that if that had been what I was expecting. However, I bought this in the Romance section and was expecting those qualities. The relationship between Niko and Renata felt rushed and flat.
I liked Renata's character. I thought she could be dense at times, but her overall strength and lack of "woe is me" was very refreshing. Even though her physical strength and weapon skills didn't put her ahead of Breed males, her crippling mind attacks definitely did. I think that some might find her cold in the beginning of the book, but I enjoyed her stoicism. It seems like most of the time a strong male is paired with a weaker female, but I felt that Renata was the stronger of the two lead characters. Or at least I felt that way for the beginning half of the book.
For the first part of the book Niko was a mystery to me. It was kind of irritating because I wanted to see more of who he was as a character. There wasn't a lot of insight into him until later in the book. When we did get told about his past it was still rather "ho-hum" for me. I wanted to see more of who he was beyond his mission. I guess because we spent more time in Renata's head I had a better understanding of her character. The stray thoughts here and there built on each other to show what made her tick. I guess I wish we would have had more of that with Niko too.
I liked that Niko wasn't looking for love, but when he did realize he had fallen for Renata he owned it. There was no mental angsting about it. He may have been a bit surprised but he never tried to deny it and was actually the first one to admit it. It was refreshing, but leads directly into my biggest problem with the story: the romance.
I think Niko and Renata needed more time to develop their relationship. I liked the unwilling fascination with each other in the beginning. I also liked the thread of danger that ran through Renata when she thought of Niko. She had to be very careful to not put a foot out of line there or Sergei Yakut would crush her. I was intrigued by the faint disgust Niko had by his attraction to her when he thought she condoned what Sergei did and that he desired her when he thought she was blood-bonded to Sergei. I was really looking forward to see how the author would get the characters together with all those factors against them. Unfortunately that was never explored.
Niko seemed to want to be with Renata because of a hot vision he saw. He seemed to fall in love with her for the same reason, because I can't see any other reason why he'd feel that way so quickly. Renata seemed to want Niko because he can help her find Mira and because to heal she needs his blood and his blood makes her hot. She seems to fall in love for the same reason. I wish I could have seen a real reason why they want to be together. As it is I feel that after the adrenaline wears off and they don't have to rescue anyone they'll start to realize they don't know each other at all.
I was intrigued by Hunter right away. I predicted what would happen, but not how it would center around Mira. I'm interested in what part he will play in the upcoming story arc. I was very irritated by the inclusion of Andreas Reichen's story arc. It was blatant sequel bait. It added absolutely nothing of value to this storyline. I like to read connected stories in a series, but it is very irritating to have so much space in a book devoted to a character that doesn't impact the current storyline at all.

Unfortunately I have to say this is not one of my favorite Adrian tales. I was hooked on the first four but Renata and Niko's' story seemed to lack a lot of the page turning intensity the first four had. I still enjoyed the read but it lacked the fire of her previous.
Although I was not as connected with this heroine as I was with the heroines in the previous books, I still loved the book. This series gets better and better with each book. If you have liked this series so far, you will not be dissapointed with this installment.
Another great book from Lara Adrian. Can't wait to get the next one.

Both hero and heroine addicted to danger...you can just imagine the sparks and adventure these two encountered. This book has lots of fights and bloodshed but it doesn't detract from the story. The romance between the two main characters is secondary to the vampire war storyline. Well written, good book.
This series of paranormal romances feature Vampire men and mortal women. They are fast moving, sexy and fun to read. Each book has as the main character a Vampire Warrior, a member of a special forces group assigned to keep other vampires and mortals safe from rogues. He meets his 'breed mate' at some point in the book and rescues her from danger. Standard theme, but very well written.
a book better read in the series, this is book five. But it is find read alone, then try to get into the seriew. Gen One Vamps try taking over the world, they fight Gen one vamps. Sow start but worth the effort.
I really enjoyed this book, but it didn't have anything to do with the main couple. Renata and Nikolai really didn't do anything for me. I liked Renata's power and Nikolai was the typical warrior. They were pretty bland, IMO. However, I really enjoyed the storyline. I like how the story is progressing. It was exciting and I was practically on the edge of my seat to see how it was going to play out. The introduction of Hunter was intriguing and I can't wait to read his part in the upcoming books.

With a twist of events, the Gen One vampire is brutally killed and Nikolai pinned for the murder. While he is detained, Renata tries to sleep. When she awakens she is disheartened to find the young child that she has come to love, Mira, was sold to another Breed because of her oracle abilities. She runs to Nikolai for his aid in getting Mira back. As their desire with one another heats up, the Gen One mystery slowly reveals even more clues.
Searing romance, high adrenaline action, and a solid plot weaves a well-rounded VEIL OF MIDNIGHT. This is a must read for most paranormal fans. The Breed is set in a unique world with captivating characters and high-charged action. Absolutely loved it!

The book was good and Lara gave those who had not read any of the series some detailed information about the main mission of the Order. This is a book I would reccommend for any Adrian fans.

What a great book. It kept me tingling with anticipation throughout the story. I read it in one 24 hour period, and the only thing that diappoints me about Ms. Adrian's books is that I'm done reading them too quickly, and I want more!
Definately read this series in order, its the best way to experience the story of the Order.

Its was exciting from start to finish!!
I loved this book and am liking the whole series. I will repost after I have loaned it to my daughter and sister. There are parts that are a little graphic that I just skim over, but overall, the story is wonderful......

Very enjoyable
another great one by adrian: nico & renata's story. worth the read.
I was looking forward to this book but it just didn't live up to what I had hoped. I had a harder time staying interested in the storyline. I don't know if it was because of the wait for the book or because it was based solely on the H/H with little contact from others in the storyline or if because the child was such a huge part. I missed the action that was in the other books...this one seemed like the each side was continually running from the other side when they rarely came together and Nikioli was not a team player like before. The incidents in Germany continued in this storyline but really seemed so displaced in the book. The twist just let me down at the end and seemed like the ending after that was just tacked on to fill space until the dinner. Harsh review but I really expected better. Maybe this is the low point in the series. I will still read the future ones.
