Based on actual historical figures in the history of Dahomey in west Africa. The writing is vivid, brisk, and only occasionally cryptic. Colorful characters act in a setting of which most modern readers were probably unaware until this novel appeared. Chatwin mainly wrote from his own adventurous experiences, and the material for this book was developed during a couple of those adventures.

Filled with presumably accurate historical details, this book ought to be interesting. In fact, in the beginning, it hooked me with its humor and beautiful writing. Half-way through, I began to feel bored and didn't finish it, but I am going to give it 4 stars because I think others might like it.

Be aware that because of the subject matter and times the book deals with, it naturally contains some savage or gruesome scenes. (There are a few images I wish I could forget.)
