Tom Jeffcoat thought he had sealed his fate when he rode into town and accidentally mistook Emily for a boy while she was working at her father's livery in britches. The two fought from the instant they met, especially when she found out he was opening a competing stable across the street. Somewhere between battles they start to see each other for who they really are and grow attracted to each other, despite being attached to others. It soon becomes undeniable, and the author doesn't drag it out with a frustrating lack of communication between them. Spencer is a master at the slow, simmering tension and build-up, and it was a delight to read. Alongside the main plot is the side romance between Emily's father and his first true love, together again after being apart for over twenty years, and their story is just as engaging and interesting as the central one.

1880's in Wyoming territory - very realistic characters with a moving plot. Great story! One of my all time favorites.

She does such an amazing job of describing the characters and the two main characters are so perfect for each other. I could just imagine the love, devotion, and fascination for each other. Tom...*gasp*...sounds so hot and his pursuit of Emily and her love just did it for me. And Emily is such an independent and caring woman, not like alot of heroines who just grovel after the men. Beautiful book.

I love all of LaVyrle Spencer's books and this one is one of the very best of her historical romances....set in the Wyoming Territory in 1888, Emily and Tom....she was a feisty tomboy; he was her father's rival in business. Whenever they met, sparks flew.

I really liked this book very tender and heart warming Victorian Western. The characters, although fictional were real and so was the story. I just wish there was a sequel to it to tell Charles' story.

This is, by far, my favorite LaVyrle Spencer book. I bought it new in the late 80's and have read it several times. It is beautiful, moving and enjoyable.

From the back cover...

Emily. With her sky-blue eyes, big dreams, and strong will, she was engaged to a man whose touch left her aching for something more.

Tom. The new man in town, he was a handsome and infuriating devil who challenged her heart's destiny...with a single, stolen kiss.

She was a feisty tomboy; he was her father's rival in business. Whenever they met, sparks flew. Until she showed him how feminine she could be. Until he showed her how true passion could feel. Until they both realized the importance to taking vows with someone you truly love...

This is a unique book about a man (Edwin) who married the woman his parents wanted him to (Josephine) instead of the one he wanted (Fannie). Twenty-two years later, Josephine is dying and she writes to her cousin Fannie, asking her to come to take care of things in her home. Josephine knew about Edwin's love for Fannie but married Edwin because she was a good child too.

When Edwin moved from Massachusetts with his wife, because he couldn't stay around Fannie and keep his vows, Charles Bliss traveled with the Walcott's because he was already in love with Emily. Edwin's daughter, Emily, always knew she would marry Charles but her mind is currently on getting her veterinary medicine certificate, not on marriage and babies.

Then Tom Jeffcoat arrives in town to open a blacksmith shop and a livery; the livery will be in direct competition with the Walcott's. When Tom meets Emily, sparks fly. And then things changed.
