This is fiction but it seems so real. You feel the ice and the human hardship. Visceral. Loved it.
Arctic exploration has always fasinated me. A real good listen.
Absolutely one of the best reads i have enjoyed in awhile of this genre. Thrilling. Part fiction, part truth. Trapped in ice in the cold winter the Narwhal holds a ship full of heros but unfortunately no one will ever know who they all were. This was a very moving read. If you are interested or would like to know about the voyage of the Narwhal this is a great book to read.
Historical Fiction about the mid nineteenth century Artic explorations. Well written and good for book discussion. We did a companion read with the short story from Ship Fever. There's a cross over character.

This was pretty good - a little slow in parts, but overall interesting. It felt like a sequel to _The Terror_ about a mission looking into John Franklin's disappearance. It was well researched and the character of Zeke was especially easy to hate - he made a good villain in that there wasn't anything redeeming about him.

The Norwahl sets sail to the Arctic north to find survivors of an English expedition that left years before and never returned. Most of the ships crew are Americans and they leave on this adventure from Philadelphia. There are as many reasons to be on this ship as there are people. The captain of the expedition, Zeke is looking for fame and notoriety; Erasmus (the main character) seeks scientific discovery of plant and animal life; Ned, the cook, is a poor Irish immigrant who fled the famine in Ireland. Through the various characters in the book, you get a glimpse of life in America and Europe in the 1850s, but you will also meet the people of the north Arctic the Esquimax (Eskimos) during the arctic expedition.
This well planned trip to the dangerous icy waters of the north went awry and created some unplanned adventures, but at this point in the book I was not that interested. I could not get into this book and I found the writing tedious and difficult to get through at times possibly because sea voyages are not generally something I am interested in.

This is a decent book, i didn't very much like it because it is really historical. I am not much one for fiction, but its very well writtien, definatley not a young reader book, more of an advanced young adult to adult book.
You will like this book if like historical, and very realistic writing. There is romance as well as adventure in this book. Basically the whole story is about a man who wishes to find the ship which was lost up somewhere in the hudson bay.

The book discusses a colonial ship moving thru glaciers of ice, I can only compare that this book moves at a "glacial pace". Very slow....wasn't able to finish it.
