An outstanding first write by Du Brul. This guy knows how to spin a suspenceful tale and keep the reader guessing and on edge. Great main character. Can't wait to read the whole series.

I sought out this book mainly because I'm a fan of Clive Cussler and especially the Oregon Files novels. Jack Du Brul is a co-author for most of these. I have to say that I really enjoyed this Philip Mercer story and will likely read more of the series. I can definitely see Du Brul's writing in the Cussler stories including some of his ideas. For example in this novel, a Russian sub was camouflaged as an old ocean freighter -- very reminiscent of the ship Oregon in the Oregon files. In Vulcan's Forge, Du Brul managed to keep several story lines going and bring them all together at the end including an unexpected twist. Very enjoyable non-stop action and adventure!

Interesting tale, but it isn't Cussler.

A great adventure thriller whose hero is a combination of Dirk Pitt and James Bond.

Well, we finally find out who Harry really is! Mercer is rambunctious and leads us a merry chase to the end. I really enjoyed this one and can't wait to see Mercer in action again.
I just started Deep Fire Rising from this same author and with the same main chracter, Philip Mercer.

Vulcan's Forge" is a fast-paced engaging read. The book is pretty much a formula work with no real suprises or original ideas but the action is well written and well informed.
The characters are pretty transparent and not very well developed and the end is predictable. The hero is car wrecked, shot, run over by a train, crashed in a helocopter and involved in numerous fights with people who out class him but he does the Timex thing and keeps on ticking despite numerous injuries. He survives due to repeated instances of incredible good luck.
Although it is far from the best book I have read in this genre, if you have an afternoon with nothing to do it is entertaining in a no thought required sort of way.

A bit far-fetched disaster senario, but well written.

From the back cover: It begins deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, where a nuclear bomb strikes at the fiery hot heart of the earth. Churning, spewing boiling lava, a volcano rises with unnatural speed from the ocean floor - the source of a new mineral that promises clean, limitless nuclear power.

It continues in hot spots around the globe: Hawaii, where a secessionist movement is about to turn violent and the American Army may be asked to fire on U.S. citizens; Washington, D.C., where the subway system becomes the site of a running gun battle; the Far East, where disrupted diplomatic negotiations jeopardize world peace; a rogue Russian submarine, circling the infant volcano.

Caught in the middle is Philip Mercer, a geologist and a one-time commando with shady contacts in all the right (or is it wrong?) places. When Mercer learns that the daughter of an old friend is being kept under armed guard in a local hospital, he vows to rescue her, not knowing that this is the first step in unraveling the fantastic secret of...Vulcan's Forge
