My 7th grade lit teacher read this to us, and I immediately fell in love with it. It's set in the frontier days, where Commanche raids were very possible. Lewallen's family is killed and his 4 year old sister Eula Bee is taken captive by the Commanches who wanted to raise her themselves because their own children didn't usually survive the winter conditions. Lewallen and his neighbor a comanchero, who's own children were taken captive as well, go after the children in a rescue attempt.
read it!!
read it!!
This is a page turner, would like to have had more closure at the end regarding the remaining family members (we made up our own ending:). Still I would recommend reading this book. Well researched historical fiction.
So exciting; one of the most enjoyable examples of historical fiction for young people that I've ever read. I particularly enjoyed the fact that it was set in Texas.
