I found Western romances mediocre--until I discovered Jody Hedlund. Full of cowboys (and cowgirls!), natural disasters in the wild, tales of pioneering, and small towns in the making, Jody's novels in old Colorado delight me. I don't know how she did it, but Jody Hedlund had me grinning and my eyes watering at the same time as I read Waiting for the Rancher. I wanted to crack up at the silliness but also sigh with happiness and the romance.
Starting with the main male character making a bold move that soils his reputation, Waiting for the Rancher had my eyebrows raised immediately. With a subplot of "teaching" how to flirt, the book felt lighthearted and fun at some points, yet other moments (such as grave injuries) had my heart going faster as I wondered if the characters would make it. I adored the main female character, and despite only her hair and eye colors being described, I swear she was as vivid as if I saw her with my eyes. The romance was tender but fierce. However, although it was closed door overall, there was sometimes too much spice, and I had to skim.
Minus the spice and how the book is similar to other novels of Jody Hedlund's, Waiting for the Rancher was a great read! Hints at the next book, Willing to Wed the Rancher, were dropped towards the end, and I look forward to seeing the story of High Country Ranch continue to unfold!
