Even though this is a book intended for young readers, I was captivated by the depth of the characters in the story. Each was unique and added humor, sensitivity and the allure of being a teenager again. I believe what frightens us most as we mature is the unknown, especially as it pertains to what life really holds for us.
Sals friend Phoebe camouflages her fears with conjecture and intrigue while Salamanca covers hers with humor and compassion. Her anecdotes are whimsical and entertaining. Underneath it all, however, is a heart full of sadness and longing, of trepidation and urgency.
Gram and Gramps add the element of stability and empathy that Sal needs in order to reach the end of her journey where she hopes to find her mother and the answers she already knows.
A great read for anyone at any age.

Wow this is an excellent book, sad, but very touching. A Newbery Medal winner; all young people should read this. It may appeal more to girls, from perhaps 5th grade through high school. I read it in one evening and enjoyed it as an adult.

This was a sweet coming of age story about love and loss. It was really three stories intertwined. During a road trip with her grandparents Hiddle, thirteeen-year-old Salamanca tells them the story of her friend Phoebe Winterbottom, whose mother disappeared, just as Salamanca's own mother disappeared. Phoebe thinks a lunatic kidnapped or murdered her mother, but Salamanca does not know why her own mother went away and never returned. That is why her Grams and Gramps are taking her to Idaho, so that she can be reunited with her missing mother. Salamanca learns a lot about her Grams and Gramps on the trip, about their love for one another, and when she finally reaches Idaho, she understands why her mother disappeared.

About a year ago, Sal's mother left their farm in Kentucky, telling everyone she needed to find herself. For a while, Sal received postcards from her mother, but when they stopped arriving it's as if Sal's life has been put on hold.
She hates her new life in Ohio, and hasn't made many friends in school. She certainly doesn't like her father's new friend, Mrs. Margaret Cadaver! As she and her grandparents set out on the trip to Idaho, the old couple ask Sal to tell them stories. The stories Sal tells are about her classmate, Phoebe Winterbottom, and it's strange, but as Sal talks about Phoebe and her family not only do things become clearer about her friend...they become clearer about herself and her own family.
Sal's voice is so winning in Walk Two Moons that I could sit and listen to her tell an endless number of stories. She tells the truth even when she puts herself in a bad light. By the time Sal and her grandparents reach Idaho, the young girl's going to have some growing up to do, but after reading this book, I know she's going to be just fine.
Walk Two Moons won the Newbery Medal in 1995. In my experience, it's the only book award that hasn't steered me wrong. If you're in the mood for a fast-paced book about love, loss and the complexity of human emotions and relationships, please read Sharon Creech's moving book. Sal's a very special young girl.

My daughter thought this book was great! She read it for school (reading class 7th grade)
I was not an emotional kid, but I sobbed and sobbed at the end of this. It's a beautiful tale, artistic and layered and I'd recommend it to adults as well as kids. This book is a masterpiece.
I thought this book was a great easy to read story. There are a lot of lessons to be learned while reading this book. Great for middle school age kids.

I am seldom surprised by the ending of a book. This was an exception, truly deserving of the John Newberry Medal.
This is a wonderful heart warming story of a young girl and her trip with her grandparents to find her mother on the other side of the country.

I never read this book, but a friend of mine who was more into this sort of book really liked it.
omgsh!!!! the freatist book ever! but it kind of upsetted me wen her......well i cant really say it bc then it would get of a big part of the story! it happends at the end though!! well when you read my review check out my books!!! thanx!!!
