This book is amazing! Major Damon'Rocky'Gause was a true hero with a journey back to freedom that will amaze you and stay with you. His dedication,instincts,drive, tenacity, quick wit, and bravery is astonishing. What is even more unheard of is going on and signing up for a second tour of duty. He and his family sacrificed so much for America's freedom! This book is a great read. One of those rare pearls that every reader hopes to find.

While reading this book you begin to wonder what Damon Gause left out (like Rita) and what he added (too much heroics and lucky breaks?).
Still, I have read numerous books about Americans, Australians and Britishers who stayed behind the lines and fought the Japanese, or escaped from them to return to Allied forces. All of these books are astounding stories, and these are just the ones written by survivors. What experiences happened to those who fell in this war, that we will never learn about?
It is said that truth is stranger than fiction. As I recall some of the incidents that happened to me during my military service, I am perfectly willing to accept Gause's story as true.
Looking for great adventure that makes Hollywood films seem tame by comparison? Read any of the books about those who stayed behind to fight the Japanese.

This is an amazing book of courage and adventure as Damon Gause escapes the Bataan Death March, deciding that was not for him. His travels from the Philippines to Australia, a trip of 3200 miles in a boat that continues to break down, leak, and is in constant need of repair. His stops at the various islands along the way, receiving help in repairs, and the generous supplies from the natives; his encounters with the Japs seemingly at every turn and the humor he employs to avoid capture will take you there right along with him. A wonderfully written book that I can describe as only miraculous to make it though typhoons and enemy waters(not to mention the sharks) -- if you have read "Ghost Soldiers", you will want to read this. Hard to put down.
