Beautiful language and a compelling psychological study.
What a wonderful study of human beings. Our book club had a great time with these characters!
This book was written before James' magnus "Portrait of a Lady" but I find it to be just as engaging and maybe even more to the point of the matter. Some readers may find the ending abrupt and critics have long said he didn't care for any of his characters by the end of writing this book thereby "bowing out" early. But in truth the book is admirably resolved and considerably poignant for its heroine. Honestly, there was no other way to end it.
