Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bristol, England... home to doctors and lawyers and old-money academics. It is not the sort of place where people are brutally murdered in their own kitchens. But it is the sort of place where everyone has a secret. And everyone is watching you. As the headmaster cr...  more »

WOW! My exclamation at turning the last page was , "Holy Crap!" Loved the writing style, loved, loved the suspense! Really thot I had figured out who the killer was early in story, and was completely surprised at the ending!

Joey Mullen is a hot-mess, a 27 yo self-proclaimed screwup. She's working at a resort in Ibiza, marries bartender Alfie after a quick romance. They end up moving back to England where they move in with Joey's brother Jack and his wife Rebecca.

Tom Fitzwilliam lives two doors down with wife Nicola and son Freddie. Tom is headmaster at local high school, and women are attracted to him no matter what their age! But Tom has secrets and this builds throughout the story.

Jenna Tripp, 15 yr student at Tom's school, lives nearby with her mentally unstable mom who is always taking pics of Tom and other neighbors. The plot twists and turns when Jenna's BFF Bess has a crush and too many meetings with Tom.

No spoilers here! Read the book, it was fascinating. I'm now looking for other books by Lisa Jewell.

A creepy, chilling psychological thriller which kept me up at night until I finished.

It begins with a murder; you don't know the victim or who caused the macabre bloody scene.

There is Tom, a charming head teacher at a high school who liked his female students a little too much. His strange quirky wife Nicola and their peculiar teen son who sat at his window taking pictures of everyone he saw.
A young student in love with the teacher and newly married Joey living with her brother and his pregnant wife deciding whether or not to have an affair with Tom. Add to that a delusional, paranoid mother who thinks everyone is trying to get her.

All the above fill the scene with abundant twists and turns. However there are many unanswered questions the writer never addressed, therefore I am forced to give this book 4 stars instead of 5.

Melville Heights is in Bristol, England. It is the sort of place where everyone has a secret and everyone is watching you. Headmaster, Tom Fitzwilliam, is beloved by one and all. Joey Mullen, his new neighbor, develops an intense infatuation with him. Tom's teenaged son Freddie has witnessed Joey behaving strangely around his father. Twenty years earlier, a schoolgirl writes in her diary, charting her doomed obsession with a handsome young English teacher named Mr. Fitzwilliam. What does the schoolgirl's infatuation have to do with Joey Mullin's? Jewell teases out her twisty plot at just the right pace. You will be kept guessing until the startling revelation on the very last page. Can't wait to read more of her books as each one is masterfully written. Recommended to those who love suspense.

Another Lisa Jewell gem. She has a fascinating and perfect way of weaving mental health issues into her stories. Well drawn characters, and you're never really sure who is the 'bad guy'. This is a quick read. Another first class story from Lisa Jewell.
