Yoshikawa created this monumental tale of 17th century Japan before the Second World War. It's been widely published ever since, in several languages. It's been hailed as "the Japanese Gone with the Wind." In this first volume, we meet two major characters near dead on a battlefield. This volume follows how they grapple with their survival, their status as supporters of the losing side, making their way back home and beyond.
Great story, I read this book back in the 80's. I need to buy the book, since I forgot what happens next. If you are into Japanese historical figures, then read Musashi, it's a must. Very well written.
