The title's misleading but this is an excellent collection of short stories about African-American life under slavery and what came afterwards. There are varying stories about Blacks who are "light enough to pass" and relationships with white parents or Blacks who became successful living in Europe only to come home and find out that things hadn't changed in the U.S.
A fascinating collection of life as it was, written by someone who was there.

This was a great read. It is a collection of short stories about the ways blacks were treated by whites. In each story he is giving you examples of how different whites(through their eyes) saw and treated blacks in the days of slavery. Mr Hughes was a very great writer. He keeps your attention to his details. He makes you feel as though you're there watching with him through his eyes. I recommend this book for all to read.

Very interesting read....surprisingly timely attitudes to have been written in the 1930's
