I first off want to say that Sophie Kinsellas books are an instant buy for me. And when I do purchase one I plan (wish there were italics here) to read them. I curl up with a nice glass of wine or cup of tea and enjoy the suspended reality of her books. Because let's face it, there's no Pulitzer Prize winner seal on the front of them, they are almost always witty, and engaging with endearing and interesting characters..but not always exactly "realistic".
However I was SO sad to see this book fall so flat. I wasn't distracted by the shifting voices as others mentioned. It's clear whose voice is speaking in each chapter- and if you couldn't tell, they are labeled with their names ;) But this book had such funny and endearing moments and then just abruptly stopped.
For one, Ben turned into a total duche bag, literally overnight. I get that the author wants us to stop rooting for them as a couple but it was so abrupt I was turned off. Lottie's nievete and the way she copes with her breakup was farcical, but again..part of the books style. However, the fact that she realized the marriage was a mistake and that she still loved Richard but decided to have a "goodbye shag" was also a bit off-putting. And throughout most of the book Fliss and Lorcan have this chemistry and you root for them to build something and reach some magical moment, and in the end it's just flat as well. The end...that's it..done. No plans for the future, no talk about their hook-up and the large misunderstanding after that. Just period..turn the page...oh wait, that's the end of the book. It was very anticlimactic. Actually that's a perfect way to explain this whole book. There were funny and amazing parts that just built up to nothing.
Quite disappointing because of how much I love this author, but I know my expectations were high to begin with so it earns a 3. Not terrible, just not wonderful (as many of her books have been). I recommend 'Can You Keep a Secret, Remember Me, and I've Got Your Number if you are new to this author. Please don't judge her by this book if its your first of hers!!
