Another solid Inspector Lynley book. This one really shows some of the differences between Havers and Lynley.

When a young boy from a private school is found mudered, DI Lynley and Sgt Havers are asked to investigate by his old school chum. As they commence their quest, they are met with a wall of silence and resistance at every turn. With no shortage of suspects Lynley and Havers struggle on even while dealing with private matters of their own.
The plot is a masterfully written, it crisses and crosses and twists and connects. I just love these books where every detail has meaning.
I was somewhat troubled by the synonymous use of 'homosexual' and 'pedophile'. It's a misconception that the two are even remotely related and I found the correlation offensive. On the other hand it did serve to throw a curve ball into the investigation. And it is true enough also that this is a work of fiction and bookcrossing journals are probably not the best place for my social commentary.
That said, I will most assuredly pick up another Elizabeth George book in this series - perhaps I'll start at the beginning.

A fine Inspector Lynley mystery. Very complex, with several seedy undertones to the fine public school environment to choose from as they search for a boy's murderer. See also the audio book, which was narrated by Derek Jacobi!

This book is much more complex and has a somewhat different plot from the Mystery! series on Public TV, but if you liked the TV show,I think you will like this.

When a 13 year old boy goes missing, then tragically turns up dead,Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, and forensic scientist Simon Allcourt-St. James sense evil behind Bredgar Chambers's cloistered walls.
This was very entertaining and no matter how much I try, I can never figure out who did "it". And I resist cheating by reading the last few chapters. Elizabeth George really writes a good mystery. Now....for book 4.....

From Library Journal
Thomas Lynley (the earl turned policeman) and Sergeant Havers focus their prodigious talents on uncovering the murderer of a young boy from an exclusive independent school near London. While author George necessarily centers the plot on solving the case, she adroitly plumbs the emotional and psychological depths of fully fleshed characters coping with various forms of personal stress in addition to the murder. As in her previous work ( A Great Deliverance; Payment in Blood), George offers refined, feeling prose, an abiding sense of humanity, and a pervasive undercurrent of mystery. A necessary purchase, exceedingly fair and full of grace. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

A student at a private boarding school in England was murdered. Two policemen from Scotland yard attempt to solve the crime. The actual murderer is the least expected.
