Personally, I think there is no better reference for a woman who is pregnant. Granted, they are a little paranoid about some things (such as taking medications and what you eat, etc.) but overall the information is very helpful, particularly with its question & answer format. I highly recommend this book.

As a natural childbirth educator in training and a normal birth advocate, I cannot endorse this book. While there is some very good information, there is a definite bent toward extremely "medical" childbirth.
Helpful Score: 6
I hated this book. I tell everyone I know who's pregnant never to read it. It focuses so much on every little thing being a sign of disaster, almost all of which are the mother's fault for not eating the right thing/sleeping the right way/whatever. There is no joy in this book, only gloom. Try the Sears & Sears Baby Book instead!
Helpful Score: 6
I think that this book is one of the worst pregnancy books that I have ever read! Every chapter is full of what can go wrong with your baby, the pregnancy and birth. Yes it does have lots of pregnancy info. But it represented so negatively, and doesn't even come close to representing the wonder, joy, beauty, and anticipation that should be felt by expectant moms.
My favorite pregnancy book is the Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy. I read this book during my first pregnancy, and I though it was great, answering all my questions, but it also made me depressed and scared. It wasn't until my next child that I got other books to compare to it. There are many other books that are far, far better than this one.

This book is kind of vague. It is also set up to prepare you for a hospital birth instead of a natural one.

VERY good sound reading. Every new mother needs this book. Better then calling your mother! Or mother in law! Everything a new mom might think to ask is covered. Even the new dad will find it to be interesting. Plus whenever you have a questions you can find an answer here. I received 2 copies and have put 1 away for my daughter!
Helpful Score: 3
A good basic book about the first months. It does, however, minimize the "discomforts" of pregnancy (especially in that third trimester) and provides an unrealistic view of the options available to birthing mothers during labor and delivery (take note if you live in a small town). A good book, but not the definitive resource on pregnancy.
Helpful Score: 3
All the standard medical advice in one place, and many details about what is happening to you and your baby. For that, it is good. However, I would recommend looking into more natural ways of dealing with pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnancy is not an illness--it's a natural process for most women, and doesn't need the medical interventions most of us come to expect with any pregnancy in America.
Helpful Score: 3
I didn't really like the way this book emphasizes the mother's weight so much. There are many more important issues to focus on that would give the book a more positive bent. There was plenty of good information, but none that cannot be gleaned from surfing the internet or looking at other childbirth books. I also wish it had more information and guidance about unmedicated birth, which is best for the baby.
Helpful Score: 2
This book was helpful in giving a general idea of what to expect. But please know that it is not going to contain everything to be expected. Everyone is individual and can experience more or less, or none of what is mentioned. The book also briefly discusses what is happening in the womb, which is really neat! Congratulations, if you are expecting a miracle!

This is the most important book to own during your pregnancy! I referenced this for every twitch, pain, or weird "symptom" that came up. Get it for ANY expecting mom!
My pic is different and it is a revisted and expanded second edition. THIS book was a God send. It was like a Bible to me while I was pregnant the first time and a great asset still during my second pregnancy. I believe this is still the most saut after book for new mothers today. It has sound advice, great medical advice, month by month things to watch for and to be aware of. It was so valueable to me that I read it daily. If you are expecting, you will want to have this book on hand for a variety of reasons... but first and foremost you will want it because it is reliable and a wealth of information!

This book was most informative during my pregnancy with my first child. I learned questions to ask my OB/GYN that might have been skipped otherwise and it also helped me to not bug the doctor 24/7 with common situations that new mothers would totally "freak out" over. This was undoubtedly the best book I read during my pregnancy and I would certainly recommend it to new mothers.

While the format is friendly, this book is not my favorite book for pregnant mamas to read. Some of the information is presented in a rather alarmist way and complementary therapies are either not discussed or discouraged. Try "The Pregnancy Book" by William & Martha Sears, or "Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn" by Penny Simkin for a more balanced read. Pregnancy is not a disease, don't read books that promote fear!

Very informative, covering many topics I had not previously considered. Includes recipes that "help insure a healthy baby and mother", plus month by month anylsis of development of baby and changes the mother can expect. Also, common tests performed during pregnancy and the issues of the first 6 weeks postpartum. Perfect for a first time mom-to-be or as a new, detailed view for repeat moms.

At this point, this book is pretty much required reading for pregnancy. Seriously... they should just issue you a copy as you walk into the OB's office! But they don't so I'm lising it here. The book is arranged by months of pregnancy, so you know... "what to expect"... and also has a very good index for looking up particular symptoms. It will not, however, tell you when the baby is coming. I know this because I keep looking for a book that will do that. Apparently, it is still up to God. LOL But in the meantime, take it from a mom of 7... you DO need a good pregnancy book as a guide so that you and your OB can be friends (as opposed to the enemy who keeps clogging his phone lines). This is the book for you.

Most moms have heard of this book so it practically needs no review! If you haven't though, it is sort of a pregnancy "bible"! It proceeds by month of your pregnancy and continues with information on postpartum period, fathers and your next baby, for example. It is a very useful book, particularly for your first pregnancy (when there are no kids to distract you from reading it cover to cover!). I don't remember encountering anything in my own pregnancies that this book didn't cover to some degree. EXCELLENT book!

It is a book that trains you, prepares you to know what the Dr. is going to do. It does not give you alternatives that are very common now, and it does not account to why you must have certain tests done.
It is very hospital friendly, meaning it will make all hospitals happy if all their patients would just comply with their impositions.
It is better to read a book that has the benefit of the mother and child in mind rather than the comfort of the Doctor and his/her staff.
I recommend to read Bradley Method of Child birth.

The pregnancy bible, you've got a question, there's probably an answer in here.
a bible for pregnant women everywhere
This book is very slanted toward the medical industry and leaves moms to worry about all the things that can go wrong in a pregnancy instead of just allowing them to enjoy the pregnancy. I wish this was no longer the standard that moms read. I would suggest any of the books by Dr. Sears.
This book is really great for all the first time moms. If you aren't sure what is going on with you, and are too shy to ask anyone. It has an easy to fallow month-to-month guide so that you can know what you can expect for the up coming months. This information can help ease your anxieties of what you are going through and let you know what you might need to see your doctor about or what might just be "normal".
I'm one of those Moms who had to know about the baby inside while I was pregnant for the first time. It helped my calm my anxiety and really gave good advise and guidance. I loved this book! I even was gifted the next one as my first grew older. This book was a great tool and I'm happy to pass it on to the next new mommy.
This is a really out dated book. The book has useless knowledge and can even scare and worry expected parents. I would not recommend this book. If you have any questions, talk with your Dr. They are the best resource for up to date information.
This a must have for first time mom's to be. It's like the dictonary of knowledge for pregnate women who have questions. Was very helpful and I resourced it often during my pregnancy.
Fabulous reference for pregnancy and beyond. I loved the anecdotal questions that you want to know about but seem silly when asked out loud to your doctor. Great for second babies and for dads, too! 479 pages of good stuff, organized month-by-month!
GREAT reference book for during your pregnancy! Told you what foods to eat, what foods to stay away from, how to exercise while pregnant, and lots of other facts that most pregnant women DON'T know. Gave great details on what to expect during your pregnancy and labor!
Best book on the subject for new Moms (and Dads!)
Way too fear based...very conservative. Most people like it for the format which is easy to read...but then it scares the crap out of them for no reason! The pregnancy/birth books by Dr. Sears or Sheila Kitzinger are much, much better!
The must have book for expectant mothers! My daughter found it quite helpful!
Doesn't everyone get 100 copies of this when they're pregnant? This is one of my extras. It could be subtitled, "A Thousand Things That Can Go Wrong Over Which You Will Have No Control."
Helpful with lots of great information for during your pregnancy
I believe this is the original version.
This was my pregnancy bible!

A must have for any mother to be!
this was one of the most helpful books i had when i was pregnant: it detailed each month including how you might feel emotionally, look physically, as well as what your baby was doing developmentally. It also includes a fair amount of things to watch out for, red flags etc, but it wasn't terrifing like some pregnancy books tend to be. Worth a read.
An absolute must for an expecting mother. I read it with all 4 of my pregnancies.
A great book.
Great book this is a book I never put down when expecting my children.
Never finished reading - horrible format, too clinical, fear based, focuses on negative, "diet" is unreasonable - definately NOT lite-reading. Thought it was a "must-have"... definately NOT (for me, anyway). I wanted a natural birth (in a hospital, though) - this book was NOT helpful for my mindset or spiritual needs. Try Ina May Gaskin "Guide to Childbirth", Henci Goer "Thinking Woman's Guide...", and England/Horowitz "Birthing from Within" - those became my MUST-HAVES!!!
Wonderful resource for pregnant women!
When you are expecting the bun in the oven is geting close please refer to this book, I will help out tons!

Be very careful with the eating recommendations in this book. They recommend almost no fat for the mother while pregnant. This results in an extremely thin baby. My child is a teen and is still thin, whereas my other child, who I ate normally while pregnant with, is normal weight. Just my opinion, of course, but take this book with a grain of salt.
