This book series does not just contain lists of what Hirsh feels the children should know at this grade, but it gives the actual information to teach it to them, the story to read aloud, etc. Intended for a parent to use with their child, especially geared toward schooled children with parents tutoring them after school to make sure the school is not leaving the child with gaps. If you are interested in that type of information I also recommend reading William Bennett's "The Educated Child" (in which he uses Hirsh's guidelines for what children in America need to know). This book is one in a series, they go up to 8th grade.

This book has great resources for newer homeschoolers. You can read a science or history lesson stright out of the book. The book has some interesting pictures to share with your child. I used this book as a supplement with my main curriculum. There is more information in this book than you will be able to cover in one year with a first grader.

This series is a great one if you homeschool, or even if you're just looking to fill in the gaps of your child's knowledge base. A fairly easy read, plus, it's easy to pick and choose what you want to introduce or leave out. Would work as a basic cirriculum as well.
